I am thinking about buying a St.Croix Premier Rod and a Pflueger Summit Baitcaster. The total price i am getting them for is $270.00 do you think this is a good rod and reel? If you could give any comments on a better setup at around the same price range please let me know. The reason i am thinking about these is because of only what i have heard from the guys at bass pro.

Welcome aboard Dave.  In short; I would go with something different.  Shoot, for $270 you could score a Loomis IMX and a Revo S.  The Loomis would come from Fat Fish Farmer of course, and the Revo you can buy from Bass Pro.  

That's a nice set up depending on your intended use. The Summit is a high speed reel which is intended for applications that require a fast retrieve. If you are looking for an all around choice I would look for a reel with a 6.2:1 or so gear ratio as opposed to the 7.1:1 of the Summit. You may check out the Pflueger Supreme if you are sold on a Plueger. I would also look at Shimano Citica or Curado and Abu Garcia Revo SX in that price range.

The Premier is a very nice rod, for all around use I would look at 6'6" or 7' Medium power fast action.

JMHO

You might also land a St. Croix Avid and a Shimano Citica for close to that price. The Avid is a definite step up from the Premier, and the Citica is a very fine reel. That said, nothing wrong at all with the Premier...but for $270......for for thought.

I would go with a fenwick hmg and a revo SX or a citica,

but thats just me.

As you can see, we all have our favorite brands. If you are not in a hurry, the Flea Market on this Forum has great deals, often. I would keep an eye on that section. I fish St. Croix, G.Loomis, Lamiglas and Fenwick Techna AV. My preference is G.Loomis.

As you will see over time, I also have some bias towards Shimano reels.

Look around , you'll fine better out fits for the money.

Everyone gave you their opinion on what they think you should get, but no one asked what you plan on using it for. I'm assuming you want an all purpose setup? Like riskkid said, unless your planning on fishing fast, look for a reel with a ratio close to 6.4:1. Then find a rod you like in medium to medium-hvy with a fast action. If it was me, Abu Garcia Revo SX and a St. Croix Avid MF. But thats what I've got my eye on at the moment. Take advantage of the BassPro reel trade in right now if you can, and wait to get a good rod. Hope this helps.

If the quality of the rod is more important than the reel I would go with Falcon Cara for $130 & Shimano Citica for $120. If the reel is more important to you then a Croix triumph rod ($60) and Shimano Curado ($200) set up would be good. I think the Croix Triumph and premier are about equal. The triumph is less expensive because it is assembled overseas.

Although I am a St. Croix fan, I would HIGHLY discourage anyone from buying a Triumph rod. They are assembled in China and quality control has been a HUGE issue. I find it disturbing that St. Croix would risk their well established reputation by offering this product.
