Hello from Italy – Question About Using Braid Directly for Texas Rig and Finesse

Featured Replies

I mostly fish finesse baits.  One of the lakes that I fish normally has 10’ or more visibility.  I use braid to fluorocarbon leaders with spinning setups (because fluorocarbon is difficult to manage) and straight fluorocarbon with bait casters.

It may be a confidence thing and in my head but I don’t get the bites on straight braid that I do with fluorocarbon and I have tried yellow, white and green in sizes from 5 to 50#.

The advantage of FC line is less drag going through the water vs equal diameter mono line. The drag creates a “feeling” of line stretching as the bow in the line tightens.

FC is higher density (weighs more) than mono tends to sink on slack line

Today’s braids are small diameter vs both FC and mono per lb test. Most braids are buoyant and float, a few specialty braids sink.

Bass aren’t line shy but have very good eye sight. If the line affects how the lure or bait fish swim they may avoid striking.

The down side of braid is its strength trying to recover snagged lures without damaging you rod or reel. Use a wooden  dowel to wrap braid around to break off or pull out the lure

BSF shallow spools solves braid line digging into it’s self on the spool plus you can use use smaller diameter braid a big plus.

Welcome to BR😀

When I was staying up on Lake Fork for a week back in March, the guy in the hotel next to me was from Italy. He was here fishing with a guide for the week and showed me an 11 pounder he caught. I didn't know Italy had a bass fishing scene. Pretty cool!

To answer your question, straight braid is no problem. That's what I was doing until I fell for the flurocarbon gimmick. When the spool I have on my Texas rig rod wears out, it's back to straight 30# braid for me.

One thing to consider when choosing straight braid or a braid to flouro leader is cover. Sometimes I fish straight braid in vegetation, especially when flipping and pitching to heavy vegetation.

Even if I could get away with straight braid for laydowns I opt for a flourocarbon leader because A it doesn’t dig into the tree and B it’s easier to break off when you snag.

Conditions and water clarity are pretty much the answer here IMO. If it's crystal clear and you are throwing a drop shot you probably aren't going to get the same results as you would with a leader. On the other hand if its cloudy and the water is murky probably little to no difference if you are doing something like pitching a texas rig especially if it's into stuff that would create a shadow and lower visibility even further.

I actually really like having a leader on my line and the FG knot makes the line/line connection so strong, small, and smooth that there really are no downsides.

Leader gives you:

- a tiny bit of stretch (which I think helps with hookup and landing percentage)

- less tangled treble hooked baits on windy days

- a breaking point if you're snagged

- less likelihood of the line biting into wood

- less of a (potential) visual deterrent in clear water

Etc. There are definite benefits beyond just the last one.

Benvenuti!

Why?

How about a co-polymer or even Mono?

Agree! It's just a psychological thing for the angler!

Yo-Zuri Hybrid + KVD line treatment.

All FC, Co-Poly or Mono has a degree of memory, learning to manage it comes with experience. That you can find on this Forum.

12 lb has a breaking strength around 19 Lbs.

Here in Fl. with all the vegetation, wood, docks  and the very real possibility of a giant I use 15lb that breaks around 21 or 22lbs.

It depends on what tackle you are using and what baits you intend to use.
