Carolina rig in deep rocks

Featured Replies

Whats my best option for a 1/2 oz maybe 3/4 oz weight to minimize hang ups in rocks.  Egg style weight dont work.  Cylinder weight?

For me...  Phenix Rockcrawler 475 times out of 10.

I take a leftover soft plastic stick bait and cut off about two inches of it.  Then I poke a hole through the center of it and insert a Phenix Rockcrawler into it.  The plastic keeps the weight from wedging as far down between the rocks and it gives a little so you can pull it free.  Only downside is the plastic kills the sensitive so you can’t use the weight to determine the bottom composition but I use my electronics for that now anyway in the new “modern” world of fishing.

There use to be an item that was about a 3” piece of heavy duty nylon maybe a 1/2” wide w lead balls stuffed into it, a swivel at the top and bingo! They worked too but I haven’t seen those in a long while. You could probably make something similar at home..

Keep your line taut so the sinker isn't as likely to wander down into never-never land and that will significantly reduce snagging sinkers in rocky structure. Same goes for dropshotting.

I use cylinder sinkers in 3/4 and 1 oz.  Mostly in rocky areas looking for smallmouth.  I’ve never lost more than 1 a day.

Use a wobblehead (or football jig) instead of a CR.
