Backlash removal

Featured Replies

A few weeks ago I saw a demonstration on TV that made removing overruns much easier than trying to pick it out.  The method involved tightening the drag and then turning the spool handle to some point where you pull out the line and then repeat the process again until all the line is free and the tangle is gone.  Is there anybody out there that is familiar with this method?  If so, please refresh my memory on how to apply the technique. :o

It is simple.  You don't need to tighten the drag much more than it is normally set.  Just apply some pressure on the spool with your thumb, turn the handle a half to a full turn, then put it in free spool and strip out the line.  This method works in most cases and it is a God send when night fishing.

Welcome aboard!

One thing that I found helpful when removing backlashs is this.. ( a little hard to describe though).

I feed a little line back through the eye of the reel and release the spool to turn freely.  After that I take up that small slack in the line over the reel and pull straight upwards while pulling the line out a little at the same time.  The upwards pulling seems to help free the snags and tangles a lot easier.  But I do use braided line so im unsure if it will work the same with mono.

Infidel pretty well nailed it.  I saw this on Bass Edge also.  Tried it and it worked.  Of course, I had to backlash on purpose.  Oh well, I guess sometimes old dogs CAN learn new tricks.  Good tip.

i learned this trick from bassin magazine... take a 1 oz pyramid sinker by itself and cast it as far as you can. it wont likely backlash because the sinker doesnt really loose that much velocity when you throw it. your normal lures usually wont ever cast further than this will beacuse of their size and wind resistance. now take some electrical tape and wrap one time around the spool stretching it as you go. the backlash will never go deeper than this and will be very very easy to pick out using either method described above.

tip: use 3M super 33. it doesnt get gummy in the heat and it doesnt dry up like the cheap stuff does. now keep it in your tackle box. you never know when you might need an emergency band-aid. trust me it works well
