Falcon Cara / Expert Durability

Featured Replies

Hello fellow Falcon users.  In this post I would like to discuss the durability of the Cara and Expert lines.  I am Falcon user of Bucoo and Low Riders.  Where I live I do not have any good tackle shops to even go look at anything and have to order anything decent.  It's Dicks and one good tackle shop that is a Shimano shop.

For my purpose it isn't about sensitivity either.  I am considering the Eye Crosser / Bayou for a dedicated frog rod.  They are like $30 difference so that isn't even a consideration.  I have an Amistad Bucoo but I'm short so I think a shorter rod might benefit me.  Both rod lines must use different materials for their blanks.  Can anyone comment on if Cara or Expert are better for durability?  Are one or both known to be fragile? I haven't really read that much on which has a better track record.  Most of the post are on what people use or sensitivity.

Thanks for your inputs!

I have a Cara which was 7’ h which was made by Ark Rods several years ago.  I use it for Arigs and Crigs.

The Expert was just redesigned although I’m not 100% sure if the blank changed or not. You probably won’t find many first hand experiences with it yet.

Falcon offers limited lifetime warranties on both and if you do break one that’s your fault my experience is Falcon will replace it for around $100. I wouldn’t really worry about it to be honest. They make a good rod.

I have a Cara Head Turner that has been extremely durable. There has been a couple times of user error it should have broke, but didn’t.

4 years in at this point. I bought it as soon as the new Cara was released.

Bucoo lizard dragger 2 is an excellent shorter, (7ft) less expensive frog rod.

I’ve owned at least 40 Falcon rods throughout all of the series.  I have broken 2.  One in the truck door and the other after I beat it on the gunnel of the boat several times.   I was having a bad day. 🤬

I own 15 Falcon rods, both fresh and salt. 2 are Caras, more than 10 years old. They're very durable rods. All the rods have easily handled big fish: 8lb LM on Clearwater ML casting, 12lb LM on Cara MH casting, 18 lb reddish Clearwater MH spinning, 14 lb tarpon Clearwater casting. (More concerned with the reel on that one!)

No issues with any of them, Evo, lowrider, expert.

I'm 5'6", rods are 6'10"- 7'6"

I have a few falcons also.  I own the eye crosser and if you break it then you’ve done something wrong. It’s a pretty stout beast.

Im pretty sure that nothing changed but the design and location of manufacture.

And I think the warranty replacement is only $25. I broke an amistad expert and they only charged me $75 to upgrade to the Cara ($25 plus the retail cost difference).

I have broken an Expert rod ("Hudson Special" I think) a few years back, while setting hook on a 2lb smallie. It was only a few month old, so I got a replacement for free. The replacement has been in good shape so far.

Sorry I was not clear and meant If the rod was out of warranty. I broke an older Cara I bought second hand and they replaced it for $100 if I remember correctly even after being honest that I wasn’t original buyer and it was my fault.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the feedback.  Sounds like I can't go wrong with either line. Might as well save a couple bucks and do the expert.

Do you use it for frogs?  What's your thoughts on it.  It the tip slow enough for walk the dog action?  Or is it littlerally a pool queue?

that’s what I use it for. Frogs and toads primarily. Check out my review in the falcon rods thread for a more complete opinion.  The tip is borderline heavy for a frog rod if you’re using the smaller ones but for a half ounce with a decent reel it will sidearm roll cast all day. I’ve never had a problem working frogs with one.

I have Cara and Expert. Haven’t had the Expert long enough to give you an answer, but I’ll tell you… that Cara is a freakin tank. Wish I could post a video on here as I caught this incident on film; On one of it’s first trips out on Caddo Lake, I had it sitting in a rod holder on my boat sticking straight up (I run a center console/bass boat hybrid type boat so most of my rods sit in rocket launchers.) Long story short, I trolled right through a very low hanging tree without thinking about it. That Cara made it through and still fishes today, but my dad lost the tip to of one of his old beater sticks. It was a hell of an impact, I’m surprised it made it! That sold me… lol

Falcon made the Cara a nice fishing stick, but they also made it super durable. You can notice that just by holding one. Also, with the Cara only being $10 than the new Expert on most models, I'd just go with a Cara.

that’s a good point on the pricing. The experts moved to Korea and I expect the rest will follow. The Cara’s will jump to $275 or $299 I think. Get them now.

Not opposed to that. I’d rather it be Korea than China personally. The Expert I have is Korea

Agree no way the Cara doesn’t have a price bump coming

Wonder if they’re gonna do a redesign like they did on the expert

Probably, but only minor. They won’t change the seats and grips.  Probably not the guides.  Maybe just a label and accent trim like on the experts.  I have been considering a head turner (I have expert and bucoo versions now) and another HCJ since it does so much for me.  Maybe I should just order them now.

I've been meaning to grab a Cara Amistad, I just haven't since I've had to push fishing on the back burner for the past bit. Sounds like there's no better time than now. I bet they are about to drop a new Cara, because most of them are out of stock on their website. Same thing happened to the Expert when they changed it.
