Phenix feather

Featured Replies

Curious if anyone else has one or likes it? I got the 7’1” MH on sale about a month ago. Casts well, super sensitive and light. I’d say closer to a M power personally.

but good grief the build quality is crap for a $160 rod. The reel seat creeks when working lures or fighting fish, the guide wraps have defects in the thread. Just generaly

does not seem worth the money.

I like the Feather. I think they have gone up some since the GSM buyout. I believe they are going to be marketed with Virtus.

I've seen some labeled as Virtus/Phenix.

Anyway, I would return it. I haven't seen that on mine. As you have discovered they fish about a power light.

Ahh ok that makes sense. Great rod. Don’t get me wrong. Maybe I’m off on my thinking. Everything is going up in price anyway. Maybe $160 dollar rods are gonna be the new $100 rods lol

True. I believe the Feather is $190 now if I'm not mistaken.

I have the same rod and use it for jerkbaits, smaller topwater etc. Agreed that it's really more of a medium, which is why I bought it since I felt like my other medium heavy rods were a bit too much for jerkbait fishing but didn't really want to drop the extra money on an expride. Now that you mention it, I was a bit disappointed when I first got it because the epoxy on the top guide had a sharp spot. Not a big deal I took some very fine grit sandpaper to it and it's been fine but would like to see some better QC at that price point. That said I have no regrets buying it. I paired it with a Daiwa Tatula SV 103 and it's a nice light combo.

I totally agree. Better QC would be great. If I grab the reel and hold there’s and twist the reel seat creeks. Don’t does it on hook sets and fighting fish. But otherwise it’s actualy a nice rod sensitivity wise.

I got it for light jigs. But it’s almost a toad light to drive a jig home.

The Light casting model is about on point to it’s ratings, but the rest of the casting models are all off in terms of power and often quite a bit on their ratings. The H/XFast 1/4-2oz, for instance, is a pretty good rod if you treat it like a standard 1/4-1 MH/Fast, but if you think it does anything even remotely near what a 2oz Heavy rod should do, you’re going to be awfully disappointed. Consequently, they don’t have a 1/4-1 or 3/8-1 MH in their lineup, like most do, so it fills that role very nicely, but you have to know ahead of time that’s the model you want to fill that role.

I do like them, though, because they make a pretty decent rod that’s available in 2 pieces and that’s something that’s far too rare.

I can’t argue they aren’t a good rod. The sensitivity is amazing. And I like the design. I would like to try a Heavy before totally writing them off. But then I wonder is there better out the for the same price or less. My falcon lowrider is much better QC. Idk I’m probably

splitting hairs and whining here lol

Yea I had it in mind for that as well. I would probably only use it for finesse exposed hook jigs like the 1/4oz Beast Coast Sniper.

I don't think you're wrong for expecting a little more out of the rod. I haven't had the reel seat issue you're describing but I would find that very annoying. I probably would not purchase a different rod in the lineup going forward but for the niche I wanted filled it does a good job.

My favorite rod in my lineup is still my Tatula 7'2 MHR (the original Tatula rod lineup with the gold accents). It's somewhere between a moderate fast and a fast and it's just so versatile. I dread the day I have to replace it lol.

Oh nice! Those are cool rods. My falcon 7’2” swim jig is that way. It’s a MH-MF. It really Is a versatile one rod for the day kinda rod. I love that I can work jigs or Texas rigs. Or a popper on the same rod. I usually carry it and one other rod set up for a Texas rig or jig.

Looking at TW, they vary from $160-$200!!!  I think that's outrageous for what they are.  I have the ML which would be $170 new.  It isn't a $170 rod.

I agree that there are better choices for the money.  My ML doesn't creak so maybe try another reel on it.  But on the whole the rod just feels a bit cheap.  I don't like the plastic of the reel seat.  The shape is great and comfy, but the hard plastic feels cheap.  The aesthetic of the rod screams budget store to me.  It fishes fine (mine was a 'big ned rig' type rod) but there are better for the money.

Not at all.  The lowrider is a good comp.  It is $30-$70 cheaper and a nicer feeling rod.  I'm sure all prices are pushing up a bit, but before the price rise on the experts we'd have been comparing an expert at $199 to the feather at $160-$200 and the expert wins that hands down.  Now the experts are $230 I think so that's a bit more of a price gap to consider.
