Potomac Musky Fishing?

Featured Replies

Hello all, my name is Kasper and I am a 16 year old angler from washington DC. I was wondering if anyone could give me any leads on finding some Potomac Muskellunge (and surrounding tribs). I have heard rumors about these gemstones lurking in the general region and would really like to get my first one this fall. If anyone could give me any information it helps.

Thank you -Kasper

Not sure about your chances close to DC.  But Upper Potomac, up from Shepherdstown might be your best bet.

Also look at the Susquehanna and New rivers.  Roland Martin did a musky tv show on the New river, try to look it up.  Also, there’s an abundance of Northern Snakeheads in the Potomac and they are pretty close to musky in size and fight.

I do not target Muskie and know virtually nothing about fishing for them, but have caught quite a few in the last couple years.  All of these were caught while targeting smallmouth, with 3 coming on topwater including a 38 1/2”, 15lber last August.  The total number I have caught are evenly split between the 1/2 mile below Dam 4 and the 1/2 mile above the old RR bridge at Shepherdstown.  I’ve heard of catches just a little farther upriver from Shepherdstown, but that is a stretch I don’t frequently float.

Yeah I think you’re going to have to head upstream to see much success. It’s possible you could find some down near DC in the cooler months but I wouldn’t waste the time targeting them. As others have said, get up around Shepherdstown if you really want a musky.

You can still target snakeheads, stripers, and gigantic blue catfish in and around DC though. It’s truly a great fishery.
