Casting distance: Size of line

Featured Replies

Same rod, same reel, same lure.

Exact same brand/style of line.

Only difference is SIZE of the line.

Which casts further?

10 lb

14 lb

THANKS!

All things being equal smaller diameter line will cast further. It's lighter and has less resistance through the air.

Larger diameter line = more surface area. More surface area = more friction.

More friction results in shorter casts.

All else equal, the line with the smaller diameter will cast further.

Using Big Game, switching between 8lb, 10lb, and 12lb, I get further distance with the 8lb. Noticeably further with 1/4 oz crankbaits, though I haven't measured it.

Now with 1/2 oz or heavier lures, I don't get an increase in casting distance. I am maxing out for my reel, rod, and techniques.

Wouldn't something heavier cast further ????

No, it takes energy to drag to weight of the line behind your lure. If you have ever had a lure break off on a bomb cast you will see just how far they fly with no line resistance.

With everything else being equal, I would be surprised if the difference in casting distance between 10# and 14# is more than a couple feet.

My experience is with braid, no more than a couple of feet. With floro maybe 3-4 feet. With mono maybe a couple of yards.

Hmmmm, I use 10, 15, & 20 lb braid on my baitcasters, daiwa and shimano's, little or no brake or tension. 10 lb goes a country mile!

Are we talking about a spinning reel? If so, smaller diameter line gets you farther casts. Spool lip friction kicks in pretty early during a cast as line peels out. Thicker line gets deeper into the spool faster therefore more friction and less distance.

I’m not saying that it’s the norm but I have seen heavier line cast light lures further.   Same rod, same lure but 2 identical reels spooled with 10lb and 14lb.
The heavier line would carry the lure by its own weight I guess.

i doubt that works very often but for that setup it was obvious the heavy line casted better.
