P-Line HP Co-polymer Topwater line

For those that have used it:

  • Does it perform better for topwater versus other lines? (i.e. buoyancy, preventing hooks from getting fouled, etc.)
  • What pound test do you use for 3/8 oz poppers and/or 1/2 oz walking lures?
  • Do you use this line for other applications besides topwater, and how well does it work?

Thanks

I've dabbled with the 17lb before. I only ever tried one spool. The first time I put it on a reel, I had a bunch of break off issues, but I think that was because of a backlash that weakened the line in a few spots. It does float better than other copolymers. I don't remember it being more or less prone to hook fouling. I'd think 14-17 would be good for the lures mentioned. I used it for primarily for spooks, ploppers, and the occasional buzz. A few times I would throw a spinnerbait or other subsurface lure on it without any issues, but I think it probably cost a little bit of depth.

I've gone back to using mono for my poppers and spooks, fluoro for my buzzbaits, and braid for my frogs and ploppers FWIW.

I tried and liked the 12lb, still have a spool of 15 to use at some point. I stuck with yzh because of availability and price.

I’ve been using YZH 12 lb and overall like it. However, I’ve noticed on long casts, the weight of the line seems to pull the nose of the walking bait down and it doesn’t flip back and forth as well initially. Once I reel  closer, it seems to work better.

Have been wondering if the P-Line Topwater line might keep the nose of the bait up better and get it working at the end of long casts which is where a lot of bites occur.

I fished the 14lb for a part of a season.  I thought it was stiff and wiry compared to my other options and I didn't find any benefit over my other choices in mono (supernatural #1, suffix elite #2).
