Connecting a lithium battery to a charger

Featured Replies

Although this is for a kayak, I dont think that really matters. Here's my question

I have a lithium ion battery. From that battery, it connects to a circuit breaker, which then leads to an anderson plug outlet which plugs into the trolling motor.

I want to be able to disconnect the anderson plug and connect my battery charger when its time to charge.

My question is, can this be done even though the circuit breaker is in line on the positive side?  Can everything remain as is so its a simple unplug/plug in and be done? Does the circuit breaker change things?

#1 - If it's truly a Lithium-Ion - get rid of it...those things are fire hazards waiting to blow. If it's a LiFePo4, then you're safe. No, they're not the same.

Far as charging....you can run the charge through the breaker so long as the charger current is less than the breaker's trip limit. Just make sure the charger is rated for Lithium batteries.

im good with the correct charger too.

Thanks for the response.

coming back to this, but now my question is on the battery charger end of this.

as I mentioned above, I have a 50a Anderson plug with #6 wire on the kayak side of all this.

for the battery charger, I have a smaller wire with a 15a fuse on it.  the wire is a lot smaller than that of the #6.  Can I crimp that smaller wire into the 50a plug with zero issues?  I would think, as long as it fits and the crimp Is strong, then that's all that would matter, right?

I personally wouldn't go smaller than 14 gauge for a charging connection and my 5amp charger is using 10gauge to connect to the battery.

Yes,  assuming you don't have a 50 amp charger.  There are tricks you can do to make it more secure - like crimp a small butt connector on the small wire then insert that into the Anderson connector and crimp again.  Crimping and then soldering is also an option.
