First time in ~25 years...

Featured Replies

...I took my personal computer to get fixed.

Been building my own computers since at least 2000 (maybe before that...hard to remember).

Current build is from 2016. Pretty stout Windows 10 machine back in the day, built for photo and video editing. Core i7-4790k Intel chip, 32GB ram, three hard drives (two of which are SSD's), dual monitors, liquid cooled. Did what I needed it to do.

Tried to update to Windows 11, but good old Microsoft said hardware incompatible. Thought about building a new box, but just not motivated. A buddy at work had a custom gaming computer with the same Win11 upgrade issue...he took to a small local shop....and they got it installed.

Whelp, Monday I started getting BSOD's...and couldn't even get the computer in to Windows 10. I wrote down the errors, and was going to do some research. But found my motivation lacking. Dad's back in the hospital, work is a hot mess, and I just wanted it fixed.

So for the first time in 25 years, I took my computer to someone else to get fixed....instead of trouble shooting, researching, and fixing myself.

Tonight I am please to say the old computer is back up and running, with Windows 11.

Have you ever used Linux?

Nope

Open source software is far more powerful than windows. Far more. Windows is very limited. Once you get into open source software it is mind blowing what all is available.

Linux is a 100% FREE operating system. I love using it.

Agree - tried Linux some years back but couldn't quite get the hang of it. Current computer is a laptop running Win-11 - but I've disabled what apps I can

Don't use any Micro-snert apps - Firefox and Thunderbird for browsing and e-mail, VLC and MediaMonkey for my vid/audio playing, Libre Office for my 'Office' needs and NCH suite for any conversions I need to do.

Just about everyone uses Linux.  If you have an Android phone you use Linux.  My Tivo DVR runs on Linux.  My Humminbird Solix apparently runs on Linux based on the Linux license information in the manual.  I wouldn't be surprised if other brands of fish finders also run on a Linux kernel.  I'm sure there are other things I used that use Linux that I'm not aware of.

I was a software developer before retiring.  I did all of my development on Linux for the last 15 years of my career.  I wouldn't say open source software is better because I don't think the software license determines the quality of the software but Linux and open source software have had a huge impact on computing.

In retirement I use a Mac.  It's runs on a Unix core so it has all of the Unix features like Linux plus it has a well designed interface and more software is available for it.  Macs are a little pricey though.

I happen to using Zorin OS as my main computer, Windows-like interface, discovered some apps/software I liked and wished I found earlier.

I'm moving away from windows as much as I can.

P.s. I moved to Zorin OS to revive an older computer in which Windows said, "O no, no you can't", whereas Zorin OS said, "Yes I can".
