Starting a club?

@Bazoo you might consider what I've been doing for about 7-8 years now.

I organize two derbies with relatives and friends each season, one in August and another in late September.  We fish for 4 hours, do a weigh in, and then go out for lunch/beers afterwards.  There is no money exchanged; we just make the losers buy lunch and beverages for the winners.  We all know each other too, so although its not super serious or hard core, there is some respect and bragging rights on the line because the losers have to hear it from the winners until next season!

We never have more than 4 teams/boats, and always at least 2.  These lakes we do it on are pretty small, about 250 acres in size.  So they really cannot handle many more anyways.

The biggest hurdle I have found is finding someone with a boat.  I'm not talking about 20 foot fiberglass bass boat loaded up with screens either.  Just a boat with an outboard and a working live well is sufficient.
