New Tackle Bag

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I have been using an H20X bag for a couple of years https://www.academy.com/p/h2ox-premier-worm-binder and it has been great. I removed the plastic binders and the rings and was able to fit 2 3600 boxes in the main compartment. I most often only carried 1 box though, and I stuffed a water bottle, my scale, and a snack in there.

The front compartment, I removed the plastic box and I put my soft plastics in there. I can fit 6-8 bags of soft plastics in there. Plus I put my hooks and weights and other terminal tackle in the front of that compartment for easy digging.

Finally, the cloth around the zipper is pulling away on the small compartment from me trying to stuff 10 bags of plastics where only 8 should go.

So I have been trying a backpack the wife had which aint much bigger, and liking it. https://www.academy.com/p/magellan-outdoors-girls-pack?sku=pink-camo I added a sling to it, since the straps wasn't long enough for my manly frame. It actually worked pretty well, but wasn't much bigger than the bag. But because of the shape of the main comparment, getting boxes in and out is kind of a pain.

Well I was browsing through Academy and came across this https://www.academy.com/p/magellan-outdoors-camo-day-pack?sku=real-tree-apx. I took her over to fishing department and commensed to see which sizes of boxes would fit. It'll gladly take 2 3700 size boxes with room for my scale and a few small things like a snack. Could squeeze a water bottle if I wanted but the outside has a water bottle pocket.

I don't have any 3700 size boxes yet, so I've been using my 3600 size boxes. Man they are tiny in that cavernous compartment. I put my soft plastics in the front compartment still. I have a BPS worm binder that I am going to try to incorporate I think.

I have previously been keeping my flukes in a thin 3600 box to keep the tails from becoming bent. It's worked well the aforementioned bag, since I could still fit a regular 3600 box and my scale in the main compartment. Not sure if I want to keep doing that or try to keep them in the soft plastics binder. We'll see I reckon.

I am using a sling with this new pack too as it's much easier to throw a sling than to put on a backpack. And with the sling, I can move the bag around to my front enough to get out a new lure if it's wet or otherwise undesirable to put the bag down for digging around in it.

So far, so good on the new pack, we'll see how it goes.

My backpack tackle that I got at a goodwill or a thrift store, I don’t remember.

I don’t like it… too blobbing, has no structure, I don’t know how to put it into words.

keep us updated on how it working out.

I’ve been looking at Tackle Warehouse’s sling pack.

I have the Simms Tributary Sling and love it!

I’ve used it several times—it only holds three 3600-size bins.

So, I just decided creative to bring the core stuff I really need. Instead of overloading it, I can fit a few smaller boxes as long as I stick to the essentials.

Here’s my current setup:

(2) Flambeau Zerust® MAX Tuff Tainer® 3003 – for natural and dark-colored Senkos

(4) Plano Pro Latch Utility Box 3500 for everything else like jigs, chatterbaits, jerkbaits, etc.

(1) Pill Organizer that fold and small - perfect for weights and bobber stoppers.

(1) Plano Double Side StowAway Utility Box - 3449 for hooks only.

If I were to do it all over again, 6 Flambeau Zerust instead. I already had the Pro Lanuch utility box.

Works great and can just fish as hard as I can if I know that lake by heart.

One of the things I'm still trying to figure out is terminal tackle organization.

Don't want a huge box for it. Those thin plano boxes are still too thick for my liking.

What's everyone use for this? Anything soft? Ideally I'd like a soft rool up kind of thing that would lay flat, with individual compartments about 3" square.

I am liking what I'm reading about the Flambeau Zerust boxes. I'll probably pick up those if I have the choice when getting 3700 size boxes.

The Tackle Warehouse sling pack  has it so you can spin the pack around in front of you. The front compartment unzips and make a little work station.  Hard to explain, if you watch the video on it, you see what I mean.

The pack I have now I have to take off and set it on the ground, and dig for my stuff.

I think I might be creating my own problems, when fishing some place new or haven’t fished often. I switch bait a lot, which  make me think I need a ton of tackle.

While my Simms doesn't have the work station, being able to quickly spin it around and see straight into the bag is super convenient for this older guy!  There's 2 small compartments and I have my Ryugi wallets in them, so getting a hook or sinker out is easy.

And I use labeled, mesh bags instead of trays for finding my baits easily.

I like the ability to spin the bag around so much, I don't ever see myself going back to a backpack.

i have enjoyed my tw sling. I can keep 2 3600s and an assortment of swimbaits in clam shells in the main compartment, hooks, leaders and my fishing license go in the small zippered pocket inside of the "work station". it may sound silly, but the water bottle holder is a great feature. There is a small elastic band with a pull tab on it that you can use to secure the bottle in place when you are moving. I use a 1 liter "smart water" shaped water bottle and it is easy as heck to insert/extract from the holder.
My only complaint is the interior is a little tight for getting 3600s in/out. I also understand that if they made it much larger people would be trying to shove 3700s in there.

I’m thinking it might make me down size some, choose wisely and not ….. I’ll take this and this and oh yea give me that too. Gotta have this… hahaha

I'm thinking a couple of 3700 sized boxes is just about right, considering you want multiple of the good stuff in case you lose them.

I got some pictures of my bag earlier. My apologies for the poor pictures.

Sling I added, I sewed a piece of webbing in a loop to the attachment for the shoulder strap. This way, I can use the strap for cross body carry, or the shoulder straps should I need to hike a ways.

3700 main box with a 3600 thin box for my flukes.

Main compartment will fit 2 3700 boxes with some room to spare, but one 3700 is enough for just about any trip I think.

Got plenty of room for soft plastics in the front compartment.

Does anyone know of a fishing specific backpack that takes 1-2 3700 size boxes? While I like what I have, I recognize it isn't the best quality.

One of the main things I like about what I have is the simplicity. I don't want tons of extra pockets and compartments. A couple more than I have would be okay though.

Good looking set up! I wish I could help on the 3700 box bag idea. I’m a 3600 fan personally. Have ya looked on tackle warehouse yet? They have a ton of different bags

Thanks. I have looked on TW.

I'm thinking about trying a couple of the Plano Thin 3700 boxes. That'd keep the small stuff from getting too tangled up. I don't like the latches they use or I'd been all over them, not only for the thinness, but because they have 5 rows instead of 4.

If I did go with 2 of them, I probably omit the 3600 box of flukes, and use about 1/2-2/3 of one of the 3700 boxes for flukes, leaving the rest of the box for hard baits.

My idea is that I want to have enough stuff to cover both variety and extra for an all day bank fishing trip where I will walk a ways from the car.

Thanks @Big Hands, I wasn't aware of that bag. That's pretty nice. Looks like it'd be a bit bigger than what I got, might be just right for a larger outfit.

So far, one of the things I've been trying to figure out is what to do with my terminal tackle in this bag.

In the previous bag, I just put it all in the front of the soft plastics compartment, and while that wasn't ideal, it worked okay.

Doing that with this bag won't work because the compartment is deeper and it won't open in such a manner that I can easily dig through my hooks and weights.

I have a 3500 box that's a possibility, but it's huge. If it was half the thickness, it'd be better. I'll probably give it a try for a while, but it'll only help me refine what I like and don't like I think.

This might help?

This was my first minimalist bag.
