Old Line??

Featured Replies

Hello All,

This is my first post on this forum.  I've been away from the fishing scene for many years now and am slowly getting back into it.  I am in the process of going through my old line, tackle, etc. and have come across some unused spools of line.  The line is approx. 10 years old.  Is this line still good to use? Or does it become brittle with age?  It's monofilament line, I believe Spiderwire and Stren brands.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

First off,  WELCOME!!!!

Second, that line is probably no good.  I would replace it.  It's a low cost to pay ($5-9 for 300yds of mono) for some peace of mind that you have good line that you can trust.

It really depends under which conditions you stored the line.

WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My personal choice would be to repace the old spools of mono.

The cost of mono is relatively cheap and I would hate to loose a good fish because of out dated line.

Just my opinion.

Welcome To The Forum

When in doubt change it....

Welcome to the best fishing site on the net.

Personally, I would buy new line. I speak from experience. A few years ago I found a spool of line that was about ten or so years old, it looked OK so I spooled one of my reels and went fishing. You guessed it, I lost what would have been my personal best smallie at the time. Mono isn't that expensive so buy new line.

Welcome!

I would think that being on the original spool for 10 years would make it awful springy! Throw it out!  :)

WELCOME to the Forum! Don't even think twice about it. Change it!
