Bates EDC 100

Featured Replies

This reel interests me as its digital control but only 6.3 oz. It’s die-cast aluminum, unlike most Bates reels which are the CNC’d aluminum. But it’s also half the price ($200).

I’d totally moved away from DC reels but now kind of want at least one again for skipping and pitching in the kayak.

ICAST release so doubt anyone here has one yet but the combination of DC + a lightweight, small frame is appealing.

I would like a Bates reel but the Hundo is outside of my retirement budget. I too have been intrigued by the DC reels, having never owned one would like to add one for skipping as well.

This sounds like a viable option. As you, I’d like to see some more real use reviews.

Also, with the expiration of the Shimano DC patent there is a flood of DC reels on the China market that will make their way to the US market.  I would expect a DC Ark reel soon since Haibo has the Arise Cyber Z ( DC reel).  There are already $50 DC kits to convert a Black Max 3 and there is a $40 plastic DC reel for sale.  Goes to show how low the floor is to make a DC module.  Expect a flood of DC reels on TW soon.

Very interesting. Might give it some time then and weigh options.

I saw a JDM thread and now I’m also looking at SLX DC XT’s. Those are maybe a 1/2 oz heavier but I wonder if Shimano’s DC5 is a step above the Chinese alternatives, or if you think they’re all pretty much the same.

I would just get the JDM SLX DC if you are curious to try another DC reel.  Its a Scorpion/Curado 70 platform and I have heard nothing but praise about it for the price the past few years I have been aware of it's existence.  The new Chinese offerings are just going to lower the floor price for access but aren't doing anything new or better as far as I know.
