Z-Man Big Blade

Have any of you fished the Big Blade bladed jig? I tried one out today for a few minutes at lunch on a clear pond and it was interesting. If you try and burn it, it comes right up to the surface. Fishing it slow gives it the standard bladed jig action. But if you crank it quick for a turn or two it has a funky action that should trigger reaction bites.

I only had time for a few casts and didn't catch anything, but I'm looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

Darting action is the phrase I was looking for.

I have one, I bought it when they came out a couple years ago.

I too noticed that it would blow out at the surface.  I never have caught a fish on one.  Not impressed.

Mine is 1/2 ounce.  I think they make them heavier.  Perhaps a heavier version would stay down better?

I have the half ounce as well. My first impression was the same as yours. However, because I was fishing in crystal clear water I was able to see the results of imparting action on the bait.

I'm used to ripping a regular 3/8 oz or 1/2 oz bladed jig. You have to be more subtle with this one, at least with the 1/2 oz weight. I think that darting action is going to be key to getting strikes.

I have a big one (1 oz I think).  The big blade adds a lot of lift so if you want to crawl a vibrating jig then this one is the one.  I can fish a 1 oz big blade about the same as a 1/2 oz regular.  That said, I haven't found the right use for it so it probably comes out of the box this winter.

if you like that erratic darting action, Siebert Tremors will do the same.

Also, I think the sheer size might be inhibitive of getting bites, at least here.  Our bass are not as big as yours are down south.

I've had much better success with a standard sized bladed jig, so it's hard for me to justify using an oversized version that doesn't produce.

But I still have mine, and I'm willing to try again next season.

The darting action also happens on jack hammers if you give your reel a quick crank every now and then during the retrieve. It’s how I trigger a majority of bites when fishing it.

Sounds like the big blade does it more extreme. Also the fact that it comes to the surface sounds like it would work well in situations where you want it just below the surface. I wonder if you could keep it right below the surface and create a wake with it.

@woolleyfooley- yes you can.  big blade and lighter sizes (I can almost do it with the 1 oz) with a high rod tip.  You can wake them just under the surface.

Ohh I like that. That would be great for when the vegetation is only a couple inches from the surface. Maybe even in place of a wake bait in open water.
