Z Crank Elseil (P5)

Featured Replies

Anyone have experience with this rod?

What do you typically throw on it?

Thoughts on it?

Thinking about getting something for finesse cranking, not BFS though.

Smallish cranks, squarebills, etc.

THANKS

I just bought one recently. Haven't even had a chance to fish it yet.

I sold a St Croix Legend Glass on the consignment rack of a local shop because as much as I wanted to, I just never grew to like it.

When I went to pick up the cash for it, I saw that someone had a Destroyer Crankin Elseil on the rack for what I thought was a reasonable price considering it was like new.

I threw in the extra cash and took it home with me. All I have done so far was put my Zillion SV on it and cast a casting plug around the yard. I like the feel of it, but won't be able to test it for a while now that winter has started kicking in here in Indiana!

I have one. It has become one of my favorite rods. I use it mainly for jerkbaits. The tip recovers quickly so it snaps a jerkbait easily. My favorite bait to throw on it is a Megabass Vision 110jr +1. I have also thrown small cranks on it, like its namesake, the Z-crank and the OSP Blitz.  I have it paired with a Shimano Calcutta Conquest Shallow Spool. It's a blast to fish.

What are your plans with it?

Too much for a Karashi I assume?

I’m wondering how small I can go on it.

I’d love to be able to throw like a Shad Rap on it which sometimes requires a spinning rod.

It's too much rod for the Karashi. I have thrown it on the Kasumi Six Eleven and it can be challenging on that but it's not too bad. To me, the Karashi is a true BFS bait for either a BFS rod or a light spinning rod. If your goal is to throw the Karashi, I would look at something different for sure.

For the Shad Rap, the Kasumi Six Eleven is my go to.

For me the Z-Crank is best with 3/8oz cranks and jerkbaits. With stuff that is a 1/4oz, it can be frustrating to get to load.  I also throw the regular 110 on it but nothing heavier.

I planned to try using it for light to medium crank baits.

Funny that @FishTank says it is best with a 3/8oz crank because the exact weight casting plug I have on it at the moment testing it out in the yard, and I like it so far!

I was thinking OG Tiny or OG Slim crankbaits, and others around that weight. May have to try it on a Jerkbait as mentioned above, but I currently have St Croix LTB and Kistler jerkbait rods setup that I really like!

I'm thinking the Zillion is a nice fit on there and I like the feel of it so far. I've had issues with bumping the brake knob on the Zillion on other rods and the fit on this rod seems to keep that from happening, so it may be a nice combo for a few different reasons.

I figured it would be too much rod. It's not really the goal, the goal is more finesse cranking. Smaller squarebills, flat sides, etc.

My favorite right now is the Fritside 5 which is 1/3 oz. I can throw it on my OneTen Special so I would think it would be great for this rod.

1/2 oz squarebill a little too much?

I haven't used 1/2 square bills on it yet but I have thrown a 1/2oz Megabass Vision 110 on it. So I would guess it would be ok butI feel like you would want something heavier for larger sized trebles hooks, like #4s and #3s. I would need to try it.

Dang, maybe I need to buy a third OneTen Special. LOL

Clearly it's my favorite rod.

That's one rod I need to pick up. When I held it in store, I thought it was too heavy for a 110jr but perfect for the regular 110. The thing is I have the Levante Jerkbait Special and its nice rod but after getting the P5 Z-Crank Elseil which is pleasure to fish the 110jr on, I keep wanting to sell the Levante and get the P5.

When it comes to 1/2 square bills, I have 4 different rods I use depending on my mood and what depth I'm throwing them in. All work well.

St. Croix Legend Tournament 7'4" MH Mod - All around good crankbait rod. Great in shallow water for pulling fish out of cover

St. Croix Legend Glass M Mod - has a deep soft bend. Great on a kayak.  It can launch a bait.

G.Loomis 903C IMX Pro Mod-fast - shallow water square bills 3/8 to 1/2 oz

G. Loomis 866c IMX Pro Deep Flex - around 1/2oz and up.  Great for deeper running crankbaits and squarebills.  Probably my favorite crankbait rod but I think it has been discontinued.

I throw both the standard as well as the Jr on one of mine. I'm no expert but to me it works well.

My other combo is for topwater. Works great with poppers and walking baits. I throw straight braid without any issues. When it gets too cold for topwater I switch the line which allows me to have two jerkbait rods on hand.

This year I switched lines and ended up throwing the Fritside 5 on it. LOVE that thing.

I've thought about getting a Loomis or something else but to me, the P5's are without a doubt the most enjoyable rod to fish.
