Spooling line onto a reel

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I was curious if anyone had any "tricks" when spooling mono line on a reel?  I've had some problems with twists and was wondering if maybe it was how I am spooling my line.  I have both spinning and casting reels.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here's a tip

Baitcasters: Run the line off of the top of the spool. Leave about 1/8 in from machined edge of reel spool when full.

Spinning: Run the line off of the bottom of the spool. Leave about 1/8 in from edge of spool but remember the line always works better after it has been wet.

This will minimize line twist.

The reel mech showed me this years ago.

Spinning turn handle 10 turns and drop your line if it pigtails turn spool over. Set spool on edge on floor and start turning handle the spool will fall over the right way also works in the sink.

I've always left the line in the box and brought the line out the hole in the box, held it between my knees or feet, put tension on the line with hand about 10" or 12" from reel and cranked it on. It would have to be some kind of amazing coincidence (I guess anything that can happen will happen sooner or later) but I don't think I've ever cranked twists into the line this way and my luck just don't run to real good that often :)
