Weather station. Any weather nerds here

Featured Replies

Just bought my first one and looking at other stations around the area it seems mine may be a a couple of degrees too low. How do you guys go about calibrating it? What type of thermometer do you use to compare to the weather station sensor?

I’ve had a couple stations, never one that connects to the weather network if that’s what you are doing. Mine have been the mid range plastic one, that are good for a couple years, maybe.

I write off differences between my house and local stations as microclimates, it’s the temp at my house vs the temp at theirs. I get a significant difference just between the open sunny front yard and the wooded back.

I check like sensors side by side occasionally, and can check the against a Thermapen (+/- .5 F) if I want to really know.

No idea about adjusting a sensor, might have to send it back.

I can't help you with the weather station, but I would definitely fall into the category of being a weather nerd.

I'm a volunteer reporting station for rain fall and snowfall. I also look at data from NOAA and the NWS as time allows. Fascinating stuff for this guy.

I have a few thermometers and one weather station.. I have a couple mercury thermometers and a spring analog, plus a few rain gauges.

As far as being accurate….. most digital stations are + or - a certain %.. should be in your paper work. Even a certified one is only as good as the person certifying it and the base line thermometers.

Like @padlin said … microclimates….it makes a difference.. It can be as much as 5* warmer from the dock to our house( 200 ft). It’s been 5*- 7* colder down the driveway and into the open field. We have always been 3*-5* warmer than what the computer or weather channel listed. I guess it’s a realitive to exactly were your weather station is placed, out in the open, under trees, etc…

Even how high or low you put it, the official height is

2 meters(6 1/2ft). There is other criteria’s too, white louvered enclosure, yada yada… ( it’s on google).

They have weather stations that are Wi-Fi and you can check while away from the house, and there is a few out there that if you join. A weather app gets it and complies it’s findings to post.

I’d say I’m interested in the weather but I’m not a

“weather nerd”.
