G. Loomis GLX 842S (SJR) -- GLX 893S (JWR) - What techniques do you use them for ? Reels and line used with them ?

Featured Replies

I have come into possession of two G. Loomis spinning rods. One of my neighbors is making a move/downsizing (they are in their mid-80's, his eyesight is just about gone and his mobility has dropped off quite a bit recently) so they were selling some of his fishing gear. I was able to purchase two of his rods at a more than reasonable price (G. Loomis rods are usually out of my purchasing range).

The rods are - G. Loomis GLX 842S (SJR) and GLX 893S (JWR). The 842S is an older model -- the 893S is a newer model.

For those of you that own and use these rods - I am looking to learn what techniques you use them for (certainly I can see the techniques they are labeled for but often rods are used for other techniques and/or shine in other areas vs. what the label reads). If you could also share what reels and line you find to be most effective with these rods that would be great.

Thank you in advance for your time/efforts.

I don’t own either of those rods but do have several Gloomis rods. Thinking about what I have. That 842 for me has Ned and small to medium swimbaits written all over it.

I would pair it with a good quality 2500 spinning reel and my choice of an 8# line.

893 in the casting version is a light t rig and single hook moving bait rod. It isn’t moderate enough in action for trebles. 1/8 - 3/8 spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, free rig, Texas rig/jig. Pushing above 3/8 felt doable but I usually moved to my 873.

The 842 would be a good neko/wacky Rod, but I’m not sure the tip is light enough for small baits like a Ned or drop shot. The power of the NRX Ned Rod is 1, so a very light tip.

I use to own the 842 in GL3 and it was an amazing do it all spinning rod. I used a 3000 size shimano spinning reel and 8 pound Sufix mono.

Have a couple 842S not much they can't do finesse cranking, jerkbaits, flukes, neko, wacky, ned, dropshot, minnow shaking, underspins, shakyhead and more.
