Best Day with a Jig EVER! (Sort of)

I decided to fish a different pond this morning- the farthest one from home of all the local ones. I woke up later than I wanted but decided I was going for it. But on the drive, I stopped at a red light and knew another pond that I haven’t fished in a while was a lot closer, so I turned right and was there in five minutes.

I call this pond Stinkweed Pond. It’s always had a lot of (I think) muskgrass that basically eliminates treble baits, but today I found out the growth has exploded. A spinnerbait and bladed jig was simply no use and even a Texas rig was pulling in weeds by the bucket. So I simply fished a Bitsy jig in green pumpkin with a paddletail fluke trailer and swam it without stopping. Even that got fouled but not too bad. Wound up catching 12 bass, of which 9 were on that jig. Easily the most bass I’ve ever caught on jigs in one outing. The other three were on a green pumpkin Zoom lizard nose hooked with a WR hook.

The only “bad” news is that all but one was a dink. Real dinks. The biggest bass of the day was 3 lbs., so my total bag was probably 7 lbs. lol. If that. But man, they were slamming that jig!

I love when a good jig bite happens - even better if you find it out early and never need to switch up gear!

I’ve been getting skunked here in MI with the water temps what they are, so even a day full of dinks would be a welcome day to me.

Thanks for the report!

I could not recall what the exact trailer was. Had to dig through main storage of tackle to find them. It was a Keitech 3.5” Easy Shiner in Sungill.

I hear the BM calling.

Sounds like a fun morning, Brian. It's always fun to score more than ever before with a new lure. That three-pounder has a fine shape.

That's my father's go-to paired with an underspin. Great little bait, though I mostly use the Mayor these days myself.

Nice catches! I need to take a break from the moving baits and pick the jig back up soon, those bites are addicting!

What’s amazing is those dinks whacked the jig harder than it did. My gut tells me a big(ger) bass knows the bait/food is as good as eaten, where the smaller ones slam it to make sure.

That is interesting and I bet you're right about why they clobbered it.

Every time I fish jigs, I try to channel my inner WRB-2.0. I never met Tom, but I learned a lot about fishing jigs from his many posts. I like to think he’s catching bass along with me.

Dang, I am still on the hunt for my first bite on jig in a decade. It just doesn't want to pick it up ...
