LiveScope vs Traditional Baits: What Am I Missing?

Featured Replies

So I was listening to a pro on tour, and he mentioned that he has “LiveScope baits” and then “other baits,” and honestly that didn’t make much sense to me.

At that level, shouldn’t all lures be considered LiveScope baits? If you have the technology, wouldn’t you always want to use it to target fish precisely and make the most accurate presentation possible?

That’s why I’m confused by the distinction. To me, every lure should be something you can use with LiveScope—whether you’re targeting a specific fish or making casts to high-percentage areas.

What do you think he meant by separating “LiveScope baits” from “other baits”?

Not all baits appear on live scope the same. My guess would be either their material content is more easily picked up by live scope, or the behavior of the lure is more applicable to the tool.

So my main question is: how do you know when to switch into “LiveScope-style” baits like a minnow, jerkbait, big jig, or Neko worm versus when to rotate into other presentations?

What cues are you looking for on the water that tell you it’s time to make that adjustment instead of sticking with a search or reaction bait?

he probably means for suspended bass.... jighead minnow, jerkbaits, neko rigs, etc....

Some context on who the angler was and in what context he said what he said would be helpful. For example, was it a MLF angler talking about how he handles FFS periods differently than non FFS periods.

That said, I think @RHuff is correct. He's probably talking about the specific technique of targeting suspended bass with a jighead minnow. You can still use FFS to provide valuable information when you are not fishing this technique but this is the technique most people think of when the subject of FFS comes up.

When I'm throwing a buzz bait I might use FFS to see what down there but I'm not going to switch to a "FFS buzz bait" if I do.

Some baits provide a better sonar return than others. While you can see most big baits, it can be difficult to see some smaller baits. I think that the composition or coating of some baits helps provide a better return.

That being said, some people are under the impression that you chuck your bait out there and it pops up on your FFS. But the FFS cone is actually narrow, so you really need your transducer lined up with where you cast and your Livescope settings need to be correct for the water conditions.

I think he meant you should buy more baits. Buy, buy, buy, that's what a salesman wants you to do.

I agree. They also want you to sell you FFS rods, FFS reels, FFS shirts, FFS shoes, etc.

I never fish without my Fish Finding Skivvies.

Booyah has a jerkbait with a spinnerbait blade molded into the top of its head to be picked up by FFS easily. Its's called the Flashpoint.

Got me some new JDM FFS Nike's and I can confirm they WORK.

Never fished these kinds of ponds before but it was a blast.

That’s what I was thinking. What seasons are the most common for this? Winter and summer? Or

Plus early prespawn, plus post spawn. There are a bunch of fish who's default place to be is hanging out in the column.
