versatile casting rod and reel?

Featured Replies

starting to really expand my arsenal, and trying to phase out some cheaper rods. planning on a frog/flipping rod, chatter bait rod, bfs rod, and glide bait rod. but as I'm going through, I start to wonder about all around versatility, something for pond hopping or what not. looking for a medium heavy casting rod that can cover mostly anything, topwater, chatter baits, small glides (SPRO KGB lil guy), jigs, worms, ect. please give any recommendations on the combo y'all have for this stuff, not looking for anything super expensive, but I guess that's all relative I suppose. Definitely no Metanium DC level stuff though, because that's a bit out of the price range. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!! And from our great state of Florida! (I'm on the East side)

Go to the Falcon Rods website and explore their rods. They have what you're looking for at a variety of prices. I recommend one from the lowrider series. Great rods, I have a bunch.

As for reels, any from the major brands, I lean towards Diawa and Shimano. Tatula 100, 7 speed is a great reel.

What you’re asking for can be 6 different rods. What single technique do you want this rod and reel to excel at?

I feel like something for mainly top water, but I since I cant afford 6 different rods, I just want to be able to have a wide range of things I can throw.

Thank you! gotta love Florida. I'm checking out the lowrider, would you say the 7 ft MH "all round" would be the best option? I was planning on using the curado 150 MGL for the reel, as I have a weird thing of kind of turning away from 100 size reels. I am a huge Shimano fan, but I do really want to try out a diawa with those fancy t wings, but I just always see shimano and it feels like a warm hug, lol. what would your thoughts be on that, would that reel be good or should I grab a daiwa? Also, what line would you recommend?

If you are looking at a falcon, your search starts and stops with the head turner for what you want. You want a 6 power if you’re adding bottom contact and frogs to the mix.

Shimano fan here also, though use some zillions also. Pick your price point and decide from there. If you’re looking $250, then go JDM and get either a met or zillion.

I’m a mono guy for what you’re talking.

Falcon "All Arounder" wound be an excellent choice for what you are looking to do. It is a light, and fairly balanced rod, that will do well with everything except really light, and really heavy stuff.

For the reel, I'd get a Lews Tournament MB or LFS if you wanna save a few bucks.

Love Diawa rods but not a fan of their reels for every situation. Their braking is fantastic, and the cast great. They just aren't as palmable to me personally and the T Wing is kind of a gimmick.

For that use, I would get a Phenix Maxim for like $140 and put a Tatula, Fuego, Curado or SLX of appropriate size and speed on it. From Phenix, it'll be a heavy, but they overrate everything.

I have a lot less experience with various rods than the guys here, but I do use all-around rods for most of my applications. I mostly bank fish. My favorite rod for all around use is a Lews Hank Parker 6'10" M/F. It's more MH than M. I am comfortable with everything on it. Jigs, texas rigs, topwater, traps, squarebills, 1/4oz roostertails, 1/4oz jighead/grubs, and flukes. It's balanced and it's soft enough in the tip to cast lighter stuff well.

The first one I had grooved the tip after about 6 months. Lews replaced it. I am expecting the tip to groove on the second one, but I'll replace the tip and move on when that happens. The way the rod handles is worth that minor aggravation, to me at least.

I couple it with various reels, the best being a BPS Pro Qualifier 2.

I was looking for a rod to cover shaky, heavier Ned, mid weight jigs, and cranks in a pinch. I went to a local rod builder and explained what I wanted. He ask me questions like type of and poundage of line, the length of the rod, full or split grip and the weight of the reel. A few weeks later he called and said come get your rod.

After fishing it the various ways that I wanted I had a second one built just like it. I don’t ever plan to buy another off the rack rod.

so with the curado, would a 150 MGL be a good fit?

Absolutely

Dobyns Champion XP 734c

Designed as a spook (top water/treble hook lures) rod but also great for single-hook moving baits (chatterbaits and spinnerbaits) and is good enough with jigs and worms.

I've bought, tried and sold many rods throughout the years, but the DC734 is still here because I can always count on it for versatility when I only want to bring one rod for shore pounding. My main lures are small swimbaits and swimjigs, spinnerbaits and t-rig grubs. All handled by the 734.

Used Dobyns Champion XPs go for about $200 and are still covered by their no-hassle exchange program if something bad happens.
