Zodias vs. Expride???

Featured Replies

Since the Expride increased in price if I stepped down to the Zodias will I really miss out in sensitivity? Uses will be a large worms, and creature baits.

Short answer is yes, but to a limited degree. Fishing rods are all chasing diminishing returns when compared side by side.

Think of it like this. The largest jump in sensitivity would be from $50 to $100 because you’re moving from a high filler graphite to a more purpose built blank. From there you’d see another jump, but smaller in magnitude from $100 to $200. This continues until you have nearly no change above $500. In my hands there isn’t a massive difference between rods over the ~$350 price point.

Most price increases in high end rods are their guide trains which target weight reduction not increased sensitivity. I don’t think for a second a Titanium Torzite guide translates more information than sea guides with alconite rings. The titanium’s will be much lighter though.

If your experience with the expride is 100% sensitivity the zodias might be 90% if I had to guess. I don’t fish any Shimano rods and haven’t had one since early 2021.

A to A was a big step down. I don't have experience with either B model yet.

No, The Zodias has always been as sensitive as Expride in my hands. You are giving up aesthetics and the TB seal of approval.

The zodias and poison adrena aren’t that far off in sensitivity. If you said the expride is halfway between then I’m going to tell you that you won’t notice the difference. The grips are definitely different and I much prefer the PA. The PA is lighter and has lighter guides. But sensitivity is going to be really close.

I have both and my favorite for what you are going to do is the Zodias 7'2'' Heavy. Yes, it's a bit less sensitive but it makes up for it what other qualities like precision and strike force to set the hook. .

I have a new Zodias B spinning rod (7'3" M+/F, it's closer to an actual MH in my opinion and rated to 3/4 oz - I wanted more hooksetting power for bigger hooks and it's definitely got that). I bought a heavier 3000 size reel just to balance to my satisfaction. I find many MH rods to be noticeably heavier toward the tip, so this wasn't unexpected.

I also have a Zodias (A) 7'0" ML/F, and an Expride L+/F (A), an Expride (B) 6'8" M/XF (all spinning rods), and not to mention a Daiwa Zillion 6'10" ML/XF and a Daiwa Tatula Elite AGS 7'6" MLM/F (also spinning rods). They each have their own purpose and IMHO, although they do have some degree of crossover, none are redundant.

How would I even go about quantifying the sensitivity relative to the other rods? All I can say with any certainty is that from where I sit, they're all really good. I do like the overall design on the Zodias A better than the Zodias B. I can't say it'll put even one more fish in the boat even if I do enjoy using one more than another.

First of all I agree 100% with @TNBankFishing comment at the beginning of this thread. I have had the pleasure to own some high end rods (high end to me is $ 650-700.00) and of course < $ 50.00 rods. Sensitivity in my experience is very subjective. I'm almost 62 and have worked construction for the last 30+ years. The feeling in my hands is not what it was in my 20's-30's. A few years ago I bought a few G. Loomis NRX+ casting and spinning rods because I heard they were the pinnacle of sensitivity. After using them I didn't find them to be any more sensitive than my St. Croix Legend Elite's. Buy the best you can afford and enjoy it. I used to own several Zodias and Expride rods and I didn't think the

Expride blew the Zodias out of the water.
