I had a few questions about flouro,

#1 How often should you change your line when using flourocarbon?

#2 What causes the line to get brittle and how can it be prevented?

#3 What  is a good flourocarbon line that doesn't cost $25 a spool like Gamma?

I use cheap Mr. Crappie high-viz for my backing and leave it about 100 yds. short so I can get 2 reels done with one 200 yd. spool.

I live in zebra mussle land and fish often so retying often is the game. When the spool gets down the casting performance is affected I change 2-3 weeks most times.

Flouro is a 4 mocule product and is very dense so if it did get brittle (i've never seen it) it would show by discoluration and cracking.

Mono is the only one that breaks down easy. It's a 2 molcule product and you will notice white dust and hard feel.

I use Vanish because it's avaiable everywere and except springing off the spool 7-8 years ago have had no issues with it.

I.ve posted a doz. on this board to repool several days in advance of a fishing trip. and coil spring is not that big of issue.

don't take my word for it, check out tackle tour they have an excellent test which confirms this.

F/C is durable line.  It doesnt' absorb water and is doesn't break down easily.

The brittleness you are talkng about is , I think just the nature of the line.  It tends to be stiff and brittle.

This poor handling characteristic is why you see Yo-zuri hybrid, ultra soft and various blends of f/c.

If it handled well while maintaining all of it's other characteristics I doubt you find many people still using mono.

PS.  I don't the accept that topwaters suffer because of the "sink rate" of FC.  To me that's more pro hype to keep sponsors happy.  I have often used f/c with topwaters and notice no difference in performance/ per line weight.

Give Triple Fish Fluorocarbon a try. It's cheap and does a heck of a job.

I purchased several spools of the BPS fluoro last year at the spring classic on sale.  I was impressed, and when I read the TT review I wasn't surprised.  Toray makes the line for BPS, hence why they tested very similarly.  I had to try all the fluoro's though, and when I run out of all the random spools I have, I'm just going to start buying the 1000yd spools of XPS fluoro.

Don't put it on spinning reels unless you like to play with Slinky toys because that's what it looks like when it comes off your spool on it's own tons of memory as well. It's good on baitcasters though

my buddy told me to put the spool in hot water and spool it on.this seems to get rid of the springing off the spool issue and helps cut down on backlashes.
