What topwater rod?

Featured Replies

I have been experimenting with some of rods as to which one would be best suited for throwing topwaters.  However, I am not sure which one to use for this application.  I mainly throw buzzbaits,

Pop-R's, torpedos and a few larger prop baits.  In any case, what action and power do you recommend and what lb line do you use?

I would suggest you look at St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass rods. They make a rod just for top water: (TBC68MXF). I've got 3 St. Croix TBC rods and love them.

I had a great Allstar Rod I thought would be a great topwater rod, but when i threw it in it just sunk, last Ive seen of it

That rod is the right rod for the job!!!!  That rod is the do it all rod from jerkbaits, small jigs, tubes, spinnerbaits, plastics of all kind and YES top water.  If I could only fish 1 casting rod this would be the one.  The St. Croix (TB68MXF) would be the 1 spinning rod if I could only have one of them.

Topwater is a big topic, goes from frogs to hard plastics to swimbait......it is hard to find a single rod that does every thing...... :-?

I use a St. Croix Premier series PC66MF.  I like it, i dont love it but it works and its affordable!

No one rod is right for all topwaters, but a Loomis CBR783 will handle most of them very well. I wouldn't use it for buzzbaits or Frogs though.
