Question for RW and others.

Featured Replies

RW,

Have you ever used Yozuri US in #20? I really like the #6 on my spinning reels. I have no complaints so far. Also, when we had the 119 smallies I talked about in the smallie post I was using #12 on a Curado and a MH rod while throwing spinnerbaits and never lost a fish. To the point, I can guarantee you that #12 is not enough for the pad fields on the Lower Potomac while flipping. They surge big time and we have Zebra Mussels as well out the  ying yang. I have not had many problems using XT or Dura Tuff under these conditions but, I was going to try some YS in #20. How does it handle at that size? Is it really kinky? Thanks---Jim ;)

Nope, I think you will find it handles pretty well for heavy line.

I fished it for a little while on the Tennessee River striper fishing, but there is one MAJOR problem: You CANNOT break the line even in a boat. #20 is rated 26 lb test, but I promise you...you CANNOT break it! It has to be cut if you get hung up and cannot recover your lure.

Thanks RW, thats all I need to know. I will spool some up. Those pad fields in the summer are UGLY. I will let you know later in the season how it held up, I am sure it will do well. It might be what I have been looking for.---Jim ;)

Jim,

I have used the 15# and the 20# in regular Hybrid.  I am an XT user but changed for some clear water applications.  It is almost as strong as XT (and about the same diameter per # rating) and VERY VERY clear.  I immediately noticed a jump in numbers of bites when I switched.  My only issue with it is that if you backlash, the kink of the overrun loop will normally break on the next cast or hookset.  I don't backlash much but I found that it only took once to kink a spot.

I still use it some- when I plan to pitch or flip the rough stuff.  Pitchin' only causes loos loops for me so it's not an issue I have to worry with.  I also us it as leader line for c-rigs and some other stuff.

Hope that helped without scaring you from it.  I have used ultra soft in other (smaller) diameters and suspect it would handle pretty well.

Keith's comment is important. Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft is a bonded fluorocarbon/ nylon copolymer. I suspect the fluorocarbon crystals crack when a kink is created in the line. However, you don't need to worry about a weak spot sneaking up on you, it is VERY noticable. You will have to cut the line at that point.

RW,

In another post you were talking about lrtting your line to trail behind the boat (Spinning) to get rid of twist. Doing mostly bank (you do a lot too) fishing I don't have that option.

Ya'll were talking above about weakening the line with kinks on BCs. Does this come into play using #6 on spinning because of twists?

No, I don't think so. Twisting just causes the line to coil making it difficult to manage.

You can "troll" your line in the grass. Let all your line out as you are walking. Walk a hundred yards or so, then reel in about half your line and walk some more. Finish up by reeling up and walking the last twenty yards for awhile. (No weight, no lure, just free line).

Thanks for the tips RW and Flechero on this line. I am always open to experimenting with lines. I am not a fluorocarbon line user and absolutely not a braid user. I am a mono kind of guy but, I think, at least so far, this YS is pretty good stuff. As far as lines for the type of pad field fishing I described its hard to beat XT in my book and I even go up to #25 test. I just have a feeling that this flouro coated line might give me a slight edge on the Zebra Mussels. Again, thanks for your opinions, as always, this site can give you a lot of heads up info.----Jim ;)

Thanks RW (as the light bulb goes on over my head :;)),sounds so simple when someone else says it.

Have always used mono myself and probably will on baitcasters (don't have to put up with anything like justfishin is talking about) but thinking about #6 on spinning gear...
