rod & reel accumulatiing

Featured Replies

As I keep hearing about Shimano, Diawa, Pflueger etc I find myself wanting them all just because for no real reason! Like a kid in a candy store I want one of these and one of those!

How bad does it get to everyone else?

It must be "bait-monkey itis" LOL I want to own and try them all

Lures don't bother as much but reels and eventualy rods are a killer!

I agree, want to own one of everything.  My problem is mainly lures though.  I have accumulated about 8 rod/reel combos, which is know is nothing for some, but, am happy with them - just looking to upgrade  ;D.  Must admit I have the hots for one of those new Diawa Steez's.  I am partial to Quantum, would love to mount a couple of the PTs on some Kistler's.

But lures - ohmagosh - I have a low tolerance for the bait monkey when looking at lures: hard baits, soft baits, swim baits, chatter baits, spinners, buzz, plastic worms, plastic grubs, hawg tails, craw bugs, you name it, I want one of each in every color, pattern, weight and size.  Cannot walk out of any store empty handed that sells lures.  Having a laptop and watching fishing shows, is even more dangerous.  Especially when they go into great detail of where and how you can buy the lure.

I firmly believe what someone else has said - fishing is an addiction described as a hobby.

Dude, how you think I got started ? 600+ cranks, 100+ spinnerbaits, 50+ lbs of soft plastics, 50+ swimbaits, 20 reels and 15 rods later there 's always something I want to own. A week ago purchased another 2006 Pixy and ......... I think a St Croix Leyend Elite + a Daiwa Sol are sure going to make a really good lookin ' combination.  ;)

I have bought a rod or reel thinking it would work for me.

Then sold the old one.

Then realized I liked the old one better. So I purchased another of the old reels or rods on Ebay.

Then turned around and sold the new reel or rod I just bought that I thought I'd like.

Several times.   ;D

My problem is lures. All winter I see something on a fishing show or in a magazine, and I have to have it. Now, half way through the season, and I haven't even used most of them.

My wife asks me how much fishing gear I have, I always give the same reply. "Honey, I have more than I need and less than I want."

I had to get a part time job just to keep that D--N Monkey fed. :-[

First of all,

It's not accumulating, it's called collecting.

Now that you have elevated from a clutter gatherer to a snooty collector, you can definitly take the high road in any discussion.

As for selling tackle, I rarely do it.  I hate parting with it.

but it was getting to be a bit much, so I recently sold some rods and was very happy that the buyers emailed to tell me how happy they are with them.

As for reels.  Baitcasters are easy. Daiwa.

Spinning reels i'm less fussy about, although I did buy the Daiwa steez, so anything after that is going to be rough.  But I still think the best value in spinning reels is the shimano symetre.

It's definitley an addiction. First it was fly fishing and now it's bass fishing for me. I'm a real gear head no matter what I'm into, my poor wife cringes whenever I start talking about something new ;)

I'm up to 12 rods and 10 reels at the moment and still thinking about what's next....

I wonder if there is a support group for spouses/significant others ...

If there's not there should be....

"Hi, my name is Sally and I'm married to a bait monkey" ;D ;D

With you 100%

Some of these posts are hilarious. Cart I'm not sure I followed yours totaly ( not sure anyone could lol) but I got the gerneral idea and it was pretty funny.

I'm surprised their are not 50 postsers on here. Isn't the first step in a recovery  "admitting you have a problem" ? lol

I think their are MANY people on this forum still in the denial stage.

Avid I thought about listing as collecting but I fig'd only the antique collectors would read the post and lose the true intent of the post.

Well the bait monkey got fed today.....a new Shimano Crucial Drop Shot rod and Symetre 2500 followed me home ;)

I was telling my wife about this thread while explaining the new addition and you know what she said? She said I wasn't the bait monkey, I was the bait gorrilla! I'm not real sure what to make of that..... :-?

I know I have a problem.  I have over 65 rod and reel combos with a spreadsheet listing the last time I changed line on them, any reel cleaning or repairs I have done to them, etc. (keeping track of this stuff by memory is too hard).  People come over and look at my basement and cannot imagine having that much stuff.  The funny thing is that I use everyone of those rods and reels (though, the saltwater and fly combos don't get used as much as I would like).  It is an addiction, but I keep telling myself at least I am not addicted to drugs, so I feel better about it.
