Ugly Stik Rod

Featured Replies

i was wondering does anyone know what size baits are good for the ugly stik 30th aniversary ed open faced spinning rod?

I want to say that I saw this rod, and it isn't special...just a regular Ugly Stik(no modifications as far as I know). I believe that it is a Medium power Ugly stik and if you go to either Cabelas' or Bass Pro's web site you can look up the lure weights for the medium power rod. I am almost positive it is 1/8- 5/8. This is a good range for most fishing since you can use smaller lures around 1/8 ounce and also larger 1/2 lures.

Don;t quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that info is true.

I'd say bricks... in the 1-1.5lb range...

Ugly sticks are not really appropriate for bass fishing, especially if we're talking about artificial lures. They have very little (no) sensitivity and are too soft (generally) for a hard hook-set. The only application I can think of is generic retrieves, but even then you have no feel for cover and structure. There are much better alternatives.

For throwing heavy baits the first thing you need to worry about is breaking the rod.  Ugly Sticks don't break.  So you could throw the bricks that Flechero mentioned.  There isn't much you can't throw with it.  But as RW said the Ugly Stick has serious drawbacks for bass fishing.

I was only kidding in the other response....

Ok, here is my serious answer-

crankbaits, rattletraps, hard jerkbaits or several other treble hooked baits.  Ugly sticks are softer, as has been pointed out, which makes them a good rod for that purpose.  They won't be any less (or much less) sensitive than other "glass" rods.
