Abu Garcia 2005lp???? added my review/thoughts

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the AG 2005lp reel. My wife's grandmother(a devoted yardsale shopper) picked one up today for $10, she thought I would like it. She knows my love for AG reels(my cap rarely leaves my head). I have thought about getting a Revo, but I have never liked LP reels. My old Red 5000s and C4s serve me well. The reel looks almost new, it has a little gash on the right side brake cover. The website has little information on this reel and I cannot find but a few reviews about it. Thanks

I never owned an Abu LP reel prior to the REVO.  I've always heard they weren't all that great.  I'm interested in hearing your review, though, since reviews of older Abu LPs are lacking on the web.

BTW, if you don't own a REVO, I think you're missing out on what may be the best Abu yet.  I own 4, 2 SXs and 2 SCs (SC = Cabelas special).  I plan on purchasing 2 STXs before spring.   They are the smoothest casting LPs I've ever used - albiet the only one I used to any lengthy extent previously was a Shimano Curado SF.   It's leaps and bounds ahead of the Curado SF in terms of smoothness and catability.    And it was easier to get the hang of over other LPs I've tried (but did not own).

I've got a 2005LP I use on my flippin stick.

5 bearings, 6.2:1 ratio.  Very smooth reel.  I used a couple on spinnerbait rods and had no problem over the course of a couple years.  You can still get them on Ebay or at Walmart new.  Good reel for the money you paid.

Ok here go's. I spooled the reel up with Trilene Maxx 12# and put it on my 6'6" M fiberglass rod with a 3/8 Booyah spinner. Took the setup to one of my fishing spots to try her out. As I said this is my first LP reel, I am used to my Round AGs. The reel casts fairly well, but my distance(40 ft) was short compared to my other reels. I loosened the cast control up and set the centri brake on 2 and tried some more. More of the same, maybe gained a couple of feet. I caught a 2 1/2 #er on it which is always a good *** form me. The reel is extremely light(especially on the fiberglass rod) and smooth as silk. I do really like the compactness of it. The flippin switch is easy to use also. I am going to work with it for awhile and see if my distance improves. Any help would be appreciated. If it gets better and I get used to it, Revo here I come. I'm just glad I have not spent $100+ trying to see if I like the LP style.

Might want want to consider a Shimano Citica or Curado... ::(

That reel will cast a country mile.  Try loosening the spool tension knob.

BTW, it's a shame they don't have the Revo's available with the flippen switch.  I know a lot of guys don't like using them but I've gotten so used to the feature, especially for pitchin, that I can't imagine not having it.

Here's hoping Garcia can come up with that feature on the next generation Revo's as well as some slower gear ratio reels as well.

Thanks roadwarrior, but I have never liked Shimano products nor their prices.

"Abu Garcia FOR LIFE"

Not to shift focus from your topic.  But I have the same sentiment (in part).  I've owned a few Shimano baitcasters (Curado SF and Cardiffs) and never really grew to like them.  I got better performance out of my AGs.   That's not to say Shimano doesn't build fine bc reels.  No doubt they do.  But their prices are so high (for features available for less from other manufacturers) as to keep me from wanting to explore their line further.   In my limited experience with Shimano baitcasters, I've found I can as good for less $, and better for the same $.   Shimano spinning reels, now, I like.  I have a couple and like them very much.   But I'm really wanting a new AG Cardinal 800 spinning reel.

Back on topic, I'm glad you like your new reel.  I see the 2005 is still in AG's line-up.  Their website doesn't have much to say about it, so I suspect its days are numbered (especially with the intro of the Revos).   Remember, Cabelas has the Revo SC (basically a "red" S model with a mag brake) on sale for $79.99, and $10 rebate.

I suspect any of the LP reels will be discontinued when the new line of lower price point Revo's comes out this fall.
