Featured Replies

how good is a med/hvy quest Ls7 Im7 rod it was listed as 39.99 and its marked down to 24.99

also how good a reel is the Okuma Stratus GT SGT-30? was 59.99 i got it for 15.00

If you like em when you fish em THEY ARE GREAT!!!!!! ;)

It's better to ask for advice BEFORE you buy.

What your looking for now is not advice, but for members to validate your choice.

So allow me to be the first.

You got great equipment at a great price.

PS> what's a quest?

if your talking about the quest rods sold at dicks sporting goods..........THEYRE JUNK!!!....but i bought one to beat around & for the price, you wont lose much when it breaks. i give this opinion because my bro bought one & it broke when he was fighting a 5 pounder(worst time to break).he retuned it for a replacement & the new one broke within a couple months.

Just fish it until it breaks and then replace it.

I have two Shakespear spinning rods that I have put BPS spinning reels on to fish local ponds and when I take others fishing on my boat.

A new Shakespear rod costs around $35 and the BPS spinning reel about $50.

So for $80 I have a really good set up that I and my friends and their children have caught many fish, including bass, bream, crappie and catfish.

Just go out and have some fun and don't do anything silly, like trying to get your lure out of a tree or bush by ripping it out using the rod.  Rods can break in this type of situation.  I know that for a fact.

What is even more important is to check your drag so you can play the fish once it is on.  Be sure you can let some line out via your drag so the line does not break when fighing a big fish.  The drag is to be tight but loose enough to let line out.

Also, go for the extra smooth casting line and spray it with Kevin VanDam's Line and Lure Conditioner or a silicone spray to make it softer. An 8 pound test works well with a spinning set up.

Use a swivel if you get line twist.

Spool your line onto your reel in a counter clockwise manner, too.

Now stop worrying about what you bought and go out and start fishing.

ok thanks i was just wondering what others thought or knew about this stuff p.s

my mom bought it for me i didnt  ;D ;D

i tried it out today it was ok but theres rods a bit more sensitive for plastics.

by the way the rods rated at 25 lbs for med hvy so a 5 lber shouldnt break it unless its a poorly made rod

Just as some say here fish it at 24 bucks u aint loosing much if it does break .300 dollar rods break also for no reason so i have seen/read .And at 300 bucks YOU WOULD HOPE it wanst poorly made.I have 2 of these rods they work good .I read about a guy who uses um for tourneys  he dont have any probs with them either .Anyhow i seen a thread about a 450 dollar  CUSTOM rod just breaking on a cast .this thread was 9 pages of excuses and eventaully lead to a bunch of sugercoating the warrenty "Send us 100 bucks with a piece of the rod and we will send you a new one " Stuff like that

well i plan to use that quest rod in my up and comming tournaments starting january. im going to move my spinnig reel from the ugly stick to my berkley buccaneer b-30 and try that as a cranking rod since its fiberglass. it may be better then the ugly stik i was using as a crank rod. most likely rw could tell me more since he's the equipment guru here by thge way it was a 40 dollar rod that was on sale for 24 bucks. i however do like the action of the okuma reel feels simular to a shammano if i spelt it right

I have a 7' M/H Quest I bought for my son to learn to b/c with and since he hasn't been using it, I have.  I have been using it at the river where the trees, rocks and pike are hard on stuff.  It's been doing quite nicely, 'specially for the money. If it breaks, I won't be sobbin' in my suds. I'll take it over an Ugly Stick.

ok i notice everyones mentioned the rod why hasnt any one mentioned the reel does anyone have one or ever used one i dont know much about the okuma stratus gt gt30 and cant find much info online about it either

sorry, can't help you there. Don't own one.  But, is that maybe a model made exclusively for Dick's?  I have a couple Quantum b/c reels, made for Dick's.  There isn't any info about them on Quantum's website or anywhere else online.

Moby,

you could be right most of what ive found are sites for selling them on ebay , the reel seems smooth with 9 ball bearings though its sweet i can take off the drag and back reel which is an art form in itself that i used to use back up in wisconson when i used to chase muskeys and northen pike.  8-)

I've got one. It's o.k. I'm looking to replace it with one of the stradics or something similar and give it to a friend. Adversly, People can catch fish with a cane pole though.

basically, I think of it like this. If you buy a ford escort, you get a ford escort. It may be a good car compared to a bicycle, but it's still a ford escort.

I buy my stuff on a budget like you and buy good stuff on sale. If I don't have the money at the time, I don't buy what I can afford then. I'll usually try to save up for what I really want. I've found that you get what you pay for when it comes to fishing equipment. Save your money little by little and keep your eye on the web sites for the stores that are close to where you live. Not department stores so much, but stores that deal in legitimate equipment. Cabelas has a top-notch return policy that compliments the manu. warranties to protect your investment.

If you need to feed the baitmonkey, do it with lures ocassionally so that you build your bank of those.
