leader or not on braid

Featured Replies

i'm plannin on flippin grass this summer, and i'm guessing i should use braid, but do you guys tie fluoro leaders on it?

I do a ton of jig fishing in grass and reeds with braided line (30lb. Power Pro) and I prefer not to tie a leader on.  I have tried fishing with no leader and a leader and can see no difference in the amount of fish I catch plus the area I fish also has very clear water.  If anything I think I might actually catch more without the leader. Overall I catch just as many and I feel more confident my line will not break because of an extra knot.

Lots of people using yellow Power Pro when fishing grass and winning tournaments.

Easier to see in some light conditions.

I always use a flouro leader a little shorter than the rod on braid-not sure it is necessary, and I doubt if it would be necessary flipping into thick stuff.  Since I use 35-40 # braid, it will be about as big as 8-12 mono, and of course it is opaque.  Guides I have been with won't use braid at all because they think it is too visible.  Not sure of the truth.

You need not worry about the "extra knot" if you use a uni-uni or Albright.  The Albright is probably better since it is a more compact knot and will go through the guides better.  I rety every couple days of very heavy fishing to make sure the line isn't getting weakened by constantly passing through the guides.

If I'm fishing really heavy cover, wood or grass, I don't worry about a leader.  If I'm fishing more open water, then I add a leader.

This can be a never end debate.

Leader ?, Yes, less for visibility than for tackle protection, most of us use line weight way above rod tolerance/rate.  Protection for your  AR and spool shaft and a bit of stretch at hook set w/o sacrifiging sensitivity.

Just my thoughts  ::)

When flipping, using a leader for braid is like telling a woman you are fishing with a smaller worm...get my point :)

I only use a leader for pitching with braid when there is structure that will likely cut me off.  When working grass or Matt's I don't use a leader, just straight 30lb Braid.
