Shallow crankin reel?

Featured Replies

I just got me a new crankin rod for shallow runners. I am looking for a reel in the 150-250 dollar price range that will fit this application well. 8-)

A Curado 100 would fit the bill. It doesn't have HEG, but that gearing is not necessary for shallow cranking. The IPT is 25, which is fast enough for shallow cranks, but not too fast so you wouldn't be able to slow it down if needed.

It weighs in at a very respectable 7.4oz, and with the $50 rebate, it will only cost you $150. This will leave some extra dough to buy some Rick Clunn's and a few more cranks for your new set-up. B)

For shallow crankbaits, I actually use a 7.1:1 ratio reel (31 IPT), because it doubles as my jerkbait rod and I like a high ratio reel for jerkbaits. For medium running crankbaits, I use a 6.3:1 ratio reel (28 IPT) and for deep diving crankbaits, I use a 5.8:1 ratio reel (23 IPT). I have got used to these ratios for the various type crankbaits and I think that you may find a comfort zone as well. Though, I don't think I would ever use a 7.1:1 ratio reel for deep diving crankbaits. That would wear me out. If this is a dedicated shallow running crankbait rod, then a 6.2:1 ratio reel would be fine (the Curado 100D was a very good suggestion)

6.3:1 should be fine, you just have to pay attention. It is easy to get stuck in a rut of retrieving all lures at the same pace. As long as you are paying attention can slow down or speed up depending on whatever lure you choose.

As for the reel, Pfluegers have been excellent to me for years

Baitcasters

     Patriarch (6.3:1): 180

     Supreme (6.3:1): 140-160

     Trion (5.?-1, 6.3:1): 100

If you want to consider a round reel, the Shimano CTE200GT is 5.0:1.

I have this reel on a deep cranking rig and on my jig rig. It's small,

smooth, powerful and virtually indestructable.
