I am looking for a 7 ft MM spinning rod for crank baits. I have a 7ft MM casting St Croix Avid and love the feel of the Avid. But I am not used to the casting and want to get a similar rod with a spinning reel so I can make comparisons. I am having trouble finding a comparable rod. I checked the St Croix avid lineup and G. Loomis lineup and they don't make one for spinning crank bait. Dose anybody have any suggestions. So far the closest I found was an All Star Platinum MMF.

Any thoughts or sugestions?

Loomis makes one spinning rod, crankbait specific, that I know of. It's in the Walleye series. It's a true crankbait rod, but it's a Walleye rod becouse mostly 'eye fisherpeople use spinning rods for throwing smaller cranks. If you don't mind the rod saying "Walleye series", then that would be a good rod to get. I think it's 1/4-5/8 oz rated. The only drawback is, it's only 6'6" (WCBR783S). They do have a casting rod in 7', you might be able to get the blank and have it made into a spinning rod???

Check out the St. Croix Legend Tournament walleye series.  They have two, moderate action, 7ft spinning rods: the Shallow Cranker, medium power, 4-10lb, 1/8-3/8oz; and the Deep Cranker, mh power, 6-12lb, 1/4-3/4oz.

I have a Fenwick Techna AV AVS70MM matched up with a Shimano Sustain 2500. This is EXACTLY what you are looking for. I actually bought it to fish jerkbaits at night, but have only used it a few times. If you're interested, I would sell the combination for $300 plus shipping.

p.s. Although the rig is virtually brand new, I had ReelMech service the reel last year when I sent in some other stuff. I don't think it's been used since then. I have two spools for the reel, too.

That rod does sound exactly like what I am looking for. I have a spare Symmetry I wanted to try out first though. Would you consider separating?

I know a lot of guys fish baitcasters at night, but I'm not one of them!

Being a spinning gear guy i had not considered the nighttime baitcaster issues.  That's what I get for being a smart butt. :-[

You don't need a crankbait-specific SPINNING rod, you just need a 7 foot medium action fast tip spinning rod.  The reason for all the crankbait-specific hype nowadays is because we went through a fad a few years ago when CASTING rods were all heavy action, and it didn't make sense for cranks.

Just find a good MEDIUM POWER FAST TIP 7 foot spinning rod, the most that you can afford, look for sales, and it will do just fine.  We sometimes get too tied up in hyper-matching or something like that and forget that they are just rods, not machines to get us to the moon.

Buy a rod and go fishing.

So true. I have often made the point that ALL of your fishing can be done with one rod!

THE perfect Power and Action for a certain application.

It's not ALL about the CATCHING, it's also about the FISHING.

Using the "exactly right" equipment is just more fun for some of us.
