Quantum 1170 questions

Featured Replies

Hey y'all,

I have a couple of questions about a new reel I recently purchased. I found a good deal on ebay for a Quantum 1170. The reel appears to be in perfect condition and looks brand new in the box. One small problem is, the operating instructions that came with it are for a Daiwa. I have never owned an 1170 before and not sure exactly how it operates (still fairly new to baitcasters in general). My questions are:

1. On the underside of the reel and near the front is a small black slide button that moves right to left (as you're looking at it). What is this button for?

2. How do I remove the spool to change out with an extra spool of different line?

3. The turn knob just behind the star drag/handle; what is it for? It appears to tighten up the spool, but not exactly sure.

4. Are there Operating Instructions located online (been searching all morning and cannot find anything)?

5. Can I purchase an extra spool and if so, where?

Thanks for your help.

Let's call the reel what it is, a Quantum Tour PT1170 Burner

1. On the underside of the reel and near the front is a small black slide button that moves right to left (as you're looking at it).  What is this button for?
Slide it and twist the side plate down to open for spool shaft bearing and spool access.
2. How do I remove the spool to change out with an extra spool of different line?
explained above
3. The turn knob just behind the star drag/handle; what is it for?  It appears to tighten up the spool, but not exactly sure.
That is the cast control cap. Loosen and tighten to adjust the free spool drop rate and spool shaft end play....
4. Are there Operating Instructions located online (been searching all morning and cannot find anything)?
Have you ever used a low profile reel before? If you have then their shouldn't be any problem operating this reel, if you haven't then goto this article and read then practice, practice.......Basic Baitcast Reel Setup 101
5. Can I purchase an extra spool and if so, where?
Yes from Quantum

reelmechanic,

First off, thanks for your input. Greatly appreciated. As for my first question and answer, I'm going to have to hit the BassPro and have them show me. I slid it over and pulled, twisted, pushed, cursed and tried again and couldn't get anything to open. I recently moved over to the baitcaster (about a year ago) and I'm still learning the mechanics. The only thing I knew about the cast control cap was how to set up the drop of the lure based on twisting it till the lure started to drop. Beyond that, I don't know a lot about it. The web site you listed helped out a lot. Thanks for taking the time to post it. Once I figure out how to open the side plate and take out the spool, I will be set. Thanks again for your input!

Slide it toward the center of the reel, at the same time you twist either up or down on the side plate, I get confused as my Quantum's are lefties, and they operate just opposite... :)

I finally got that thing to open up and only minimal swearing this time!  Thanks.
