fishing line 101

Featured Replies

can someone please explain to me in laymans terms the difference between fishing lines lb test and the diameter and stuff, i don't get it, for example 10lb test but it says 20lb diameter, like what does that mean? also please provide ideal situations for different size lines...

the fishing line section on bassresource.com wasn't very helpful to me so i'm looking beyond that.  Thanks guys!

You are mis-stating the numbers.

With mono lines, they are rated by breaking strength in pounds and diameter in .000 or mm. Example 20 pound test has a diameter of .018 inches or .460 mm.

Braids are usually rated in breaking strengh and diameter compared to mono. Example 30 pound test has a comparable diameter to 8 pound test mono which is usually .011 inches.

Simplified, small pound test lines for small fish and large pound test for large fish. There are lots of variables involved depending on the presentations and conditions.

Don't pay attention to the rated strength, look at the diameter of the line.

One manufacturer's 10 lb. may be 0.011 while another's might be 0.013.

Not all 10 lb. tests are created equally.

What they said above...

Also, I would love to find a line that had strength of 10 lb test and diameter of 20 lb test mono  ;D

That the power pro braid has a breaking strength of 20lbs, but the line diameter of 6lb mono.

Same for the 15lb. It's got a 15lb breaking strength, but the diameter of the line is comparable to that of 4lb mono.

Braid is much stronger, and much thinner. Plain and simple.

The system could be cleaned up and less confusing if they only listed LB and diameter.  Do we really need to know what the diameter equivalent in mono is?  It just a common curiosity of many people that the advertisers picked up on and started using.  It is confusing.

It might seem confusing, but that information is actually useful in helping us add line to the reel.  For example you can put a lot more line of 20# braid on a reel than 20# mono, but how much more??  By also listing what its mono equivalent diameter is, we the anglers have more information to better approximate the amount of line we can out on our reels. :)

Reels should list yrds/ diamiter.

Simple solution:

Spinning gear: Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test).

Baitcasting equipment: Ultra Soft #12 (19.5 lb test).

Line capacity is really not an issue for bass fishing.
