Smallmouth (and a little bit of largemouth) Rod Selection

Featured Replies

This is my first post on bass resource but will not be my last.

I am about to purchase my first smallmouth combo which will be used probably just 10 or so days per summer for largemouth.  For the reel I am pretty set on the Phlueger President. I am stuck between a rod from BPS and Cabelas.  The two links are here http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?id=0037131&navCount=1&parentId=cat20287&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20287&parentType=index&indexId=cat20287&rid=

I realize that the one from basspro is 30 more dollars and am wondering if this extra money is worth the assumed extra performance.   I am also very open to any other suggestions for better combos around this price range.  I feel like the 6730x with a 6' 6" rod would be the best for the type of all around fishing I do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want you can still catch the Bass Pro Shops spring classic sale were you would get better deals once the prez reels are on sale and the bionic blades are also onsale with that combo (sold seprately) would be with in your price range just around $100-110 round about with the current sale through the 16th of march. for those math fans thats around $140 combo. so thats just another idea, you could go that route or I would look at sales at the store if you can go. ;D good  luck and hope that helped

tell us what you decide. 8-)

That sounds like a great deal, but the closest Bass Pro Shop is 3 hours away so the gas wouldn't be worth it.  Thanks a lot for the reply

I would suggest a 6 1/2' or 7', Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning combination.
