best applications for rods

Featured Replies

I have a 7ft MH/ fast action shimano compre spinning rod and was thinking of using it for soft plastics mostly is weeds and heavy cover. What line should I pair with this rod for this application? I was think 12lb mono but not sure yet. Any suggestions?

Also have a 6'6" hvy power fast action st.croix premier casting with a calcutta. What would it's best application be?

Thanks

I think that spinning rod you described would be excellent for soft plastics. The only questions are if the 12# line is strong enough for the cover you'll fish. The other question is the line and its compatibility with the reel, which you didn't specify. Bigger lines don't work as well on spinning as baitcasting, and you'd need a good size reel to handle 12# mono. You could also consider braid, which works very well on spinning gear.

Good luck.

WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For heavy cover you may be better off using braid.

Thanks for the welcome guys.  Do you think a flurocarbon leader should be used with the braid?  Just wondering about the visibility factor.  Or should I only worry about this on clear water?

Put 20lb braid  on that spinning rod and call it a day. 20lb is very small diameter and will cast like a dream and visibilty should not be a factor, color the last 4 ft with black marker. 20lb is plenty strong enough for the weeds
