not sure where you are from but here in the northwest I would tell you to get some Khalins or Jerry's grubs- you might find them around I am not sure... they are all over here in southern Idaho good for smallmouth too.

Take a look at a Mepps 'timber doodle' on the Mepps' site.  A timber doodle attached to their silver weedless spoon will do the trick on small mouth sometimes.  A Johnson weedless spoon with the same hookup or with the mister twister will get some interest also.

I don't think one curly tail grub has better action than another curly tail grub, especially in 1" size,

the renegades at wal mart work fine.

Now when you need more from your grub, like buoyancy, GYCB is the top of the heap.

Yes they are expensive and fragile,  so give the BPS models a try.

I find that BPS branded lures are very good.

The xps line is especially good.

The only grubs I will never use again is Chompers.

They work great but the garlic smell reminds me of kissing Tia Donietta. after she spent the day in the kitchen........... ;)

I don't know why you want to fish little bitty grubs, but the GYCB 3" Single Tail are small and mostly "tail". I think they are THE BOMB!
