EWG's vs Offsets

Featured Replies

I am curious if anybody else has noticed a difference in hook up ratio between these hooks? EWG's pull the point straight towards the direction of the line. But the point of the offset hook goes off to the side and angles it more into the fishes mouth. That is why I think I miss more fish with those EWG's, especially with my jigs. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I missing something?

One thing that I have noticed with the EWG vs. offset is that I get hung up in cover much less with the EWG's.  Personally I would rather lose a few fish than lose twice as many hooks and weights than I otherwise would.  AS far as fish hookups I cant say since I have only caught 4 bass with either hook, and it is split 2/2 between them.

I remember when the Tru-turn hooks first came out.  Everyone used sproats or offsets back then.  After watching another guy absolutely wax my azz in a tournament on worm hook ups I decided to try some of these new hooks.

There was no doubt about it, those hooks do increase your hook ups ratio.

Im having the same thoughts, try this take a EWG hook and a reg hook and slide it across ur rug or even try to hook ur pants youll see what i mean ,th epoint on a reg hook sticks up further then a EWG matter of fact if i didnt have so many EWG hooks i wouldnt use um any more im thinking of having a yard sale soon i got at least 100 packs i have collected in a few yrs.More i think about it the more it makes sense   why do i want my hook power going inline towards my bend i want all power going to my point !!!

Conceited Redneck, I have been doing experiments with these two types of hooks. The carpet example is a good one, but that is just the initial 'catching' of the point to the bass's mouth. Then when the EWG gets 'set', it follows a straight path towards the bend of the fishing rod. The offsets, however, actually head upwards in the fishes mouth. Therefore, giving more of a foundation for a hook up. EWG's, while a lot of times still get solid hookups, tend to barely catch the skin sometimes.

Bowtech, if EWG's produce fewer hooked bass, then I would think it stands to reason that they would get hung up less on cover.

Cart, are you saying you like EWG's or the offsets?

I seldom miss a fish on an EWG style hook and my hookups are very good.  I've had a lot of EWG's buried in a fish so bad I almost did not get them out.

The few times I have had hookup problems were with smaller bass.  Bigger ish get the bait deep enough to allow for a good hookset.

I still have some offsets I purchased a long long time ago, I stopped using them cuz they 've got the nasty habit of hooking the fish through the eye socket from inside the mouth, definately aginst the principles of C&R.

When I say the offsets I meant the bent shank worm hooks.  Back then all hooks were straight shafted. Some guys used the old Southern Sproat hooks for worming and the others used the bent offsets.  Tru Turn was the first that had the twisted shank which supposedly turned into the fishes mouth as you set the hook. Many companies have duplicated it or put their own twist on it.  Pun intended.   ;)

BTW, I still use Sproats for C-rigging, old habit that won't die though I have a harder time finding my old Eagle Claw models I usually use.  As for Worming, I agree with Raul, I've had plenty of those offsets (tru-turn style) hooks go through the eye.  I've got both, my straight shanks are a heavier shank which I use with thicker worms like the Gatortail.  I use the thinner wire tru turns on smaller diameter worms.

I am also trying to gather information on this.  So if anyone else has an oppinion please chime in.

Sorry, I haven't formulated one of my own yet.  I just started looking at offset hooks.

Jason

I used to be a big offset hook guy. But I have noticed when going for bigger bass that the EWG is a must. Especially with thicker baits. The bait can slide down more and easier IMO which results in more room for the a good hookset.

So I have been using 2/0 EWG Gammys for my small flukes and 4/0 Owner Wide Gap Plus for Ikas and Senkos. Been noticing a lot more fish on the end of my line because of it. IMO my hooksets have been better since switching.

For my thinner worms however I will still use my offset hooks in a 3/0 size.

I've never used anything but Gamakatsu EWG's for my plastics. I just like the extra space for better hook-ups.

Agree with him here. The owner wide gap plus is a huge bonus to me.The fish almost seem to hook themselves on this thing, you dont need to yank lips off to set it.Also when using it,the gap is so wide that many times I can use one size smaller for a lot of baits and it still rigs the same as the larger counterparts.Where a 3/0 is used, can use the 2/0 for example and so on.

Dont have much experience with offsets, havent used em since i was a kid catching bream and crappie on a bobber.

4/0 EWG gamakatsu for me. Very very rare that I ever lose a fish once it's on.

My favorite hook for most soft plastic applications is the owner riggin hook.

This is essentially a fat gap but notice that the offset bulge is not a straight 90 degree angle.  This may not be a factor for many of you,

but in my weed chocked florida lakes that subtle change means the difference between coming through the weeds clean, or picking up a blade of grass or  string of millfoil on the offset portion of the hook.

Not to mention the awsome hook setting ability of their cutting point.

FYI - the cutting point is not a sharpened round point like a mustad.  Rather it is cut at angle like the point of a doctors needle.  The injection needles are cut this way because they penetrate the skin much easier.  the chemically sharpened cutting point may just be the best penetrating hook ever designed.
