Which reel to choose??

Featured Replies

Ok so I am ready to buy a new reel.  I am having a hard time deciding between the shimano core and the chronarch 50mg.

Of those who have used both, which do you prefer and why?

Thanks!

I really don't think you can go wrong with either of them. I will say that I have used the core, and it is one heck of a reel.

When you get into that price range its hard to find a bad reel just your preference and what "looks" better

if I had the money I would go with the core thou  8-)

The Mg is a great reel. I own a couple. Early this Spring I was deciding between getting another MG or a Core. I eventaully bought another MG after reading some threads/reviews about the Core. The biggest complaint was that the performance didnt justify the price difference while others were disappointed in casting performance. Just passing along the info I found. I am sure the Core is a quality reel too, but after owning an MG I knew what to expect and I took the extra money and put it towards a quality rod. I am sure you will be happy with either one!

*I bought my last MG on ebay and it was delivered to my door for around $205.  :)

Get both?

Now that is the bait monkey's answer. ;D

Fishergirl,

Fortunately for you I did some partial research in comparing the two:

There are some differences. I don't own either and don't know if I'd buy either unless the price were right.

Core                                                 Chronarch Mg

Weight: 6.7 oz MGFV., 6.1 oz MG             Weight: 5.9 oz

Drag: 11 lbs.                                          Drag: 10 lbs.

Gear Ratio: 7.0:1 MGFV, 6.2:1 MG             Gear Ratio: 6.2:1

Line Retrieve: 30. MGFV. 26 MG             Line Retrieve: 25"

Line Capacity: 10/110                              Line Capacity: 10/105

Size: Cores are 100 sized                         Size: Chronarchs are 50 sized

Spool: Magnumlite                               Spool: LoMass

Brake Access: Escape Hatch                   Brake Access: Turn Key Side Plate

Brakes: VBS                                           Brakes: VBS

Bearings: S A-R (Shielded Anti Rust)       Bearings: A-R (Anti Rust)

So the differences are (Core Vs Chronarch):

* Slightly stronger drag (by a measely pound)

* Slightly greater line capacity (but not by much)

* Different Access to reel's innards

* Shielded bearings

* Different spool

* Different Line Recovery, despite the same 6.2:1 ratio

So if you all are wondering if the extra cost is worth it, you now have some more meat to chew to arrive at your conclusion. Other tidbits listed below:

Other Core Features

Ultra-Lightweight Magnesium Frame and Sideplate

Magnumlite Spool Design

Cold Forged Aluminum Drag Star

Tapered Ti Levelwind Insert

Instagage II (100FV Only)

Lightweight Aluminum Drive Gear (100MG Only)

Heavy Duty Brass Drive Gear (100MGFV Only)

Other Chronarch Mg Features

Clicking Drag

Recessed Reel Foot

Everyone raves about the Chronarch 50MG, you will not be disappointed.

We have a few guys that own the Core, so maybe they will drop in.

Raul and Redlinerobert have both, so if they don't see this thread, you might want to send them a PM.

Good luck!

I have both and have fished each of them a good bit.

While the Core is a great reel.... I honestly can't say it's any better than a 50MG.  It looks great but has nothing in practical use that the 50MG doesn't... both are light, super smooth and a joy to fish with.

My next reel(s) would be a 50MG over the Core.  The MG has an added advantage, you can swap spools with the Curado 100B and get additional line capacity if you are a mono user.  (I don't know if the CU100B is the same spool as the CU100DSV, I haven't tried that one yet.)

Thanks for all the advice, and the research islandbass!

I really like the color of the core and it's spool.... that is the only thing holding me back from getting the chronarch at this point.

I really need to stop picking things b/c of prettiness.

It is going on a mbr843c glx!

I will probably go with the chronarch after all that I have read here though.

Hmm...

Put the Core on the rod before you buy the CH50MG and then decide.

"The girl's shoes complete the outfit."

You might want to mount the reel on the rod before making a purchase. I have mbr843 imx and I had a alphas ito which is a pretty light reel and it didn't balance that well to me. It felt better on the 783.

But then again you have the glx maybe it is lighter and balance better with a light reel.

I have the MG50 on a BCR853 GLX. It is light as a feather.

have both.

construction and quality are on par...as is casting ability.

the 50mg is the better finesse reel...it's spool seems to start faster...i have them on the mbr782 and the mbr783.

the core has the heg gearing and is the more powerful of the two...in my hands, better at the heavier resistance lures...also, the core has the much stouter drag...mine are on the mbr843 and mbr844.

the 50mg does not have a 10# drag, no matter what it states in their specs...more like 5#...enough for bass but, nowhere near the core's.

personally, like the feel of the core better but, if possible, strap each on that 843 and try them in your own hands.

you really won't go wrong with either.
