Rod protection

Featured Replies

How do you guys protect your rods from scratches and cracks or broken guides when transporting from home to the lake.  My little jon boat doesn't have a rod locker.

I drive a Ford Ranger and I am worried about my rods getting broken now that I have moved up to better quality equipment (carrot stixs and st. croix).  Right now my tailgate is broken and won't stay shut so I screwed some berkeley rod holders into my bedliner and it does a pretty good job.  What else can I do or buy if need be, to ensure my rods stay in tip-top shape?

I built a 8 foot long rod holder out of PVC pipe. On one end is a cap, the other end is a screw end cap. The tubing has a diameter of 4" and holds 4 rods (each rod is in a rod sleeve). It cost about 20 dollar to build and you can paint it any color you want.

Contact 5BL, he has some rod protectors that are the best I have seen.  The only problem I have had is they seem to tear on bigger guides such as on swimbait rods.

ok those look like a good investment, but how do you transport them from one place to another?  Do you just throw them in the back of your truck?

I try to be more careful than that but at times it is the only option.  I have noticed no nicks, or chips, or anything since using these.

I use the BP rod sleeves then I put my rods in the Take It Easy Rod/Combo bag from BP..I can carry 8 combos without any damage..

If I'm only carrying a couple rods I use the neoprene rod wraps

If it's just me or me and a couple of guys on a short trip, my rods and reels are transported up front, beside the passenger seat. For longer trips where I'm carrying lots of stuff, I use a Flambeau Bazuka Rod Tube: http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0011837010576a.shtml

8-)

bps rod sleeves and reel covers work great for me

Pond Hopper, try stretching the sleeves out just a little bit by hand before pulling them on, especially over bigger guides. They shouldn't rip if you do that first and eventually the sleeves will sort of mold themselves onto each rod.

Send me your address again and I'll mail you a replacement. :)

One more thing. The sleeves I have for sale will not totally protect a rod from breakage (car door, stepping on etc....) but they will prevent nicks and deep scratches that can cause blank failure. Plus they protect your guides and such when putting in or taking rods from the rod locker.

I am not sure what I am looking for right now.  I need something to protect my rods.  I also need something to keep my rods from leaning against the garage wall?  Any recommendations?

Hauling rods around in the bed of a truck = PVC pipe

Rods in and out of rod lockers = rod sleeves

Rods not leaning against the wall = rod rack

Scott,

Like I said in the PM, class act but not needed.

One other note to anyone who has bought the rod sleeves from Scott, make sure on a carrot stick you avoid the hook hanger when removing.  That is how I tore the first one.  Not the fault of the rod sleeve just a poorly placed hook hanger, and I want to cut it off but I was told that would ruin the warranty.

That rod is still worth every penny though :)
