lipless crankbait and topwater-Fiberglass or graphite?

Featured Replies

For fishing lipless crankbait and spooks/poppers.  Would a fiberglass rod such as the silaflex be a better option than a graphite rod since those baits a treble hook baits?

I would suggest a mod-fast action rod, if you gotta have only one rod for both applications. The Silaflex is parabolic (soft, it's not the best option; you might wanna use it for crankbaits). I think an IM6 or IM7 graphite rod (inexpensive), would do just fine.

Power wise, you'd want a medium for top waters, but  a med heavy would work better for lipless CBs. So back to 2 rods... :-[

Moderate action and glass or mix of it like E-glass or S-glass

You can fish nearly all "treble hook" lures on one rod, fiberglass or graphite. The "all-around" rod would be Medium Power/ Moderate Action or Fast Action with a soft tip. The St. Croix Avid AC66MF is a perfect example and one I own. This rod is particularly nice for fishing jekbaits and topwater where a little more control is preferred.

Another Avid I own is the AC70MM. This is a more traditional crankbait rod with Moderate Action. I use this almost exclusively for lipless cranks and light, shallow runnning lures.

For big, heavy treble hook lures and especially deep divers, I fish a Lamiglas SR705R glass rod. This is "technique specific" for me and should not be considered for "all-around" use.

I have 3 combo's in mind for this kind of fishing.

1.  St Croix triumph TRS70MF with a Promax/Revo S.  I love my Avid 66MHF/Revo SX jig/t-rig setup so I am really looking into this combo.

2. BPS extreme combo 7' medium action.  I have a 6'6" medium extreme combo that I am using for lipless cranks/topwater/spinnerbait  I am happy with it but want to make it my spinnerbait rod

3. Browning silaflex 7' medium with a David Fritts baitcaster.  It would serve double duty along with crankbaits until I can get another of the same setup for cranks which will be the next rod after this.

What would you choose?

Definitely NOT a Triumph.

Stick with the Avid series, either

the AC66MF or AC70MM.

I would love to have another Avid, but they are just a little too much money.  I could never get the wifes approval until she graduates nursing school and starts to work next year.  That is why I am looking at lower cost options.  I can understand why the Triumph would not be a good plastics/jig rod, but I thought it might be adequate for the purpose I plan to use it for.  What makes it such a bad rod?

At the pricing point, there are better options. Raul and others have stated that the BPS Extreme is fine for the cost and if you have any issues, it's easily replaced. Perhaps the Triumph has gotten better, but it initially had too many issues with questionable components and poor construction. With the reputation St. Croix has earned over the years, I'm sure they were embarrassed by the introduction of this rod.

On the question of Graphite or Fiberglass.  I started with fiberglass rods many years ago.  Even made most of my rods.  Then I switched to graphite rods soon after they got popular---few years ago also.  Kept hearing how good the fiberglass rods were for cranking.  So I dropped back in time and bought a David Fritts Cranking Rod---American Rodsmiths I believe.  Used it for a while and returned it.  Too heavy too whippy, just never felt right.

Why not just get a cheap $20 glass rod, then get what you want when the $$$ is there???
