Rick Clunn reel question

Featured Replies

I have a Basspro Rick Clunn 8 bearing reel with mag brakes AND centrifical brakes. Does anyone know if the centrifical brakes are adjustable? I just can't seem to get the distance I think I should.

Thanks in advance,

Maxum

PS I pulled the side cover but the centrifical brakes must be internal. I dont want to mess with it without knowing its possible to adjust them.

your brakes are a hybrid magnetic/centrifugal system.they adjust externally with a dial.you then have a spool tension knob next to the crank.i set my spool tension loose and use my thumb.i set the dial at around 7 or 8.this produces long backlash free casts with spiderwire invisibraid.when using flouro i have to use some more spool tension.

I don't think the Clunn reel has the centrifical brake (with weights).  I think it has an inertia transfer system whereby a plate (I'll call it a clutch plate) is pushed out and rubs the spool to slow it down.  I don't think this portion of the brake is adjustable.  Only the magnetic part.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was just curious about the brakes. I guess I would not recommend buying one of these reels.

the plate doesn't rub on anything.the plate is centrifugal.the magnets are adjustable in relationship to the plate.the magnets slow down the plate which is attached to the spool.

The BPS catalog says it has the Inertial Transfer Braking system. The schematic drawing on another reel with the same system describes it as a system that automatically applies the correct amount of "spool" pressure at the critical points during the cast. The schematic clearly shows a plate moving in and out against the spool as it rotates.

However it works, it does not appear adjustable except by the exterior magnetic setting.  Itis not the traditional centrifugal brake using little weights like on other reels.

We have 7 of these reels in our family and we all love them.  I would suggest you return it to BPS for an exchange.

agreed it works different.the plate is centrifugal and the magnets adjustable.the magnets put pressure on the plate (magnetic pull) so it's called hybrid.i love it.

It is over a year old but never used. It was the first bait caster I bought when I got back into fishing. I just thought it was me and just didn't use the thing. I still have receipt, and box, do you think BPS would warranty it?

if you bring it back to a store i'm sure they will exchange it.
