mono to braid knot?

Featured Replies

Im trying out braid on my new saltwater rig and need to put some mono backing on.  My first question is, should the line diameter of the backing be the same as the braid?  Secondly, what knot works best for this application?

Blood knot is very strong and pretty easy to tie.

There is no stronger knot to join two lines together than the opposing nail knot. The diameter of the line is not an issue. check it out...

I use backing close to the same diameter so you can go with a bit smaller or larger diameter depending on application with no problem.

As far as joining braid to backing and or leader you can't go wrong with any of already suggested knots. I like using Uni to Uni since its quick and easy and if tied correctly has a high breaking strength. Another very good and strong braid to leader knot is no name knot tied to a bimini twist (really well known in the saltwater circles).

Practice tying and see what works best for you.

Remember drag setting and knot quality matter more than the particular knot you choose since you shouldn't even come close to approaching breaking strength of knots if your drag and knot are tied correctly.

It plays OK for me. Very good info, thanks. Impressed by diameter of the knot on a line-to-leader, which is my only complain with the uni-uni knot.

I'll be trying that tool if I can find it

I like to use the Improved Albright also know as the Alberto knot...tried and true for me, i've gotten snagged on countless pieces of structure and when I need to pull it free my terminal knot always fails before the leader knot.

I've been using a double or triple surgeons knot to join braid and mono for several years.  I've never had a problem with it, super simple to tie, strong.  I don't know why I don't hear about anyone else using it.

For me the surgeons knot was too large and didn't pass through the guides smoothly, which was solved by the alberto knot.

I like the back to back uni knot suggested by bassmasterbling. I use it on all of my rigs without a problem. If you are just tying for mono backing you should never work your way all the way back to that knot anyhow.

Try the Slim Beauty knot.  It's very small in diameter, strong and has worked very well for me to connect braid and mono or FC.

Wow, that knot looks really cool, the slim beauty. I'm definitely going to give it a shot. Looks like no two are the same  :)
