Rod for plastic swimbaits?

Recommended Posts

Looking for opinion on a rod for plastic swimbaits like the Berkley Hollow belly and Yum Money Minnows. Would it be the same type of rod used with hard swimbaits? I was hoping to get a spinning rod, but I am not against a casting rod. Thanks in advance.

Chad

For the small swimbaits use whatever you do for other soft plastics.

You don't need anything special. I fish a St. Croix ES70MF spinning

rod.

p.s. Try the Swimming Senko, too!

I'm not sure that's the best idea, depending on the size of the swimbait :P

Those plastic swimbait are pretty heavy by themselves.  Then when you add a 1/4 - 1/2 oz weighted hook, you'll really be overloading the rod.

For the 4.5 inch and up, I think you'd want to step up to at least a 7ft MH baitcasting rod.

Oops!  Chris at Tech is probably right.

I fish Swimming Senko, Mattlures Minnow and Shad on M/F spinning tackle. For heavier baits, a heavier rod is certainly called for. I fish the Baby Bass on an EC70MHF baitcaster.

I throw mine with the Kistler HE69MHC. This rod has some serious backbone to set the hook and close the deal.

Thanks for the input guys. I thought I might need a heavier rod. I was unable to find the weight of the plastics and knew you guys would have the answer.

Chad

P.S. I jsut got my first order from *** and the plastics look great. Can't wait to try them.
