What type braking do you prefer on a casting reel??

Featured Replies

Well, I'm sure this has been done before, but here goes.  What kind of braking do you prefer on a baitcasting reel??  Please pick one, and also pick which you prefer, internal or external adjustment (in other words, 2 votes).  And please tell us why you like what you like.

To date, I've used all 3 types, magnetic, centrifugal, and the combination of the two (sort of a combination anyway) as my Bass Pro Extreme has the inertia brake, which I believe I like the best out of all of them.  But I'm looking around for some more baitcasting reels and not sure if I just want to limit myself to the BPS brand of reels only.  So in that case I'd have to consider either magnetic only or centrifugal cause I don't know of any other brands that use the intertia brake.

Mag brakes are simple to use and understand.

And you can tell when they are on and off.  ;)

Externally adjustable mag brake.  But I'm not a zealot about it.

Ask me this three years ago, I would have said magnetic.  Two years ago centrifugal.  And now?  I have no preference.

I've been very pleased with the braking system on the Revo Premier.  It has taken a bit of an adjustment period.

That said, my gold standard is still the Shimano VBS system.

I have only used Centrifugal brakes to date, so I can't comment on the other types. I will say the the VBS system spoils the angler such that you almost don't need a thumb.
