Curado question  which parts to grease and oil

Recommended Posts

hey guys   I have two curados(300+200).  Just wondering how often I should oil and grease them? I have quantum hot sauce and also shimano oil.  Do I use both and areas should I grease and oil up? I am assuming I grease the bearings on the inside and oil the outer parts?  any help would be greatly appreciated  thanks guys!

Take the Hot Sauce and toss it in the trash.

Grease the gears and oil the bearings.

If Shimano® wanted Hot Sauce used in their reels they would have put it in the reels box.

You really shouldn't add any grease or oil to the reel unless you are cleaning the old oil and grease out first.

If you haven't ever done it (complete break downs) then I would recommend that you have the reels done once a season by a qualified shop.

so just do it once a year? thanks for the help guys!

Nobody said nuthin 'bout doing it only once a year  :-?. The ammount of services your reel needs depends on how much you use it, the more you use it the more it 's going to need grease and oil. Reel mech said: once a season , how many seasons does a year have ?  ::)

Good God Ya All!

Here we go again taking what I say out of context.  :)

When I say ONCE A SEASON, (and you all know what I mean) I mean once a fishing season. NOT the 4 seasons in the year.  ::)

No reel, I don't care how much you use it, will need a complete service 4 times a year/season. ;D

If anyone has reel problems or questions that need worked out PM me or e-mail me direct.

I'm Out of here......  :)

I think you misunderstood Raul's sarcasm.  Where he lives there no seasons, as he likes point out frequently, LOL.

Anyway, there are times when a quick addition of oil is all that's necessary.  I generally add oil to spool tips and spool bearings after every few trips.  If a reel gets swamped or slopped up with green snot, especially the worm gear, I'll disassemble, clean, and relube that reel.  Generally, I completely break down my reels once a year.  Some get the full treatment more often through out the year.

Well, where I live we do have seasons: prespawn, spawn, post spawn and huntin ( we gotta have that one, it 's the only time in the year we can shot at something and not get fined  :) ).

Your reel needs different maintenance schedules depending upon the parts involved, spool supporting bearings need a drop of oil every 3-4 trips, the levelwind gear a couple of drops of heavy oil about the same time, the gearing will need greasing less regularily depending upon how much you fish with it, if you are a weekend warrior living up north where the "season" lasts a few months your reel can live with once a year general maintenance, for us guys closer to the south the "season" may extend through the entire year, so for us southern weekend warriors the general reel maintenance should be don a couple of times a year. The more you fish the more mileage our reels get and the closer the maintenace should be done. There used to be a time when I fished every day and I dissasembled, cleaned, lubed and reassembled my reels every two months, did it worked ? well, the three reels I fished with during that time are still in service and they are over 20 years old.

I agree with that 100% Raul.  Its more about hours of usage than anything else.  I probably fish about 20-30 hours per week, and I'd think that is maybe average or slightly above average for most people here.  Some reels get more use than others.  It works for me.  :)
