When I got back into fishing a few years ago I got my first baitcaster. It was a Daiwa Samarai, cheap but was great to learn on. With the Daiwa I experienced a few backlashes early on but have not got it dialed in.  Last year I bought a used BPS Rick Clunn and have had trouble with backlashes and occasionly breaking the line in many places while casting. I have tried a few different settings but can't seem to stay clear of the line breaking or backlashes. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks

What line are you using?

Been usind either 10 or 12lb Berkley Trilene XL. Works fine with my other reels.

Thanks. The line is breaking in the spool, I guess I am just having a terrible time setting the reel up to where I don't get backlashes.

A possible other problem might be the rod. The line might be catching n it somewhere or if you have a rod guide missing it will cause breaks.

Pull out enough line for a typical cast, and then another 10 feet or so.  Then tape the spool and reel up the line.  Now your back lash won't ruin the whole spool while you're learning.
