Daiwa Exceler.

Featured Replies

do any o' y'all have the Daiwa Exceler?

It's a good price, and looks like it has nice futures! But is it better than the BPS extrema reel?

hey snapper, i have an exceler. it's a nice reel but a tad finicky to get adjusted just right. is it better than the BPS extreme? at one point or another, i've used or have owned many of the BPS reels and i would say 'yes' but here mainly because of the feel of the components. the daiwa has aluminum side plates and a metal drag star vs. plastic for the extremes.

the BPS rick clunn reel is currently on sale for cheaper than the extremes and the same price as the exceler...i think this is a better comparison. the rick clunn reel has a metal drag star and a forged handle (take forged over cast handles every time...they feel great) but a plastic sideplate.

Spinning or baitcasting?  I have a Exceler 1500 spinning reel that is a great little reel.  I handled every reel in the price range at Cabelas and the Exceler is what I came home with.  I don't know of a nicer reel for $70 or $80, and I am usually a Shimano guy.

The Rick Clunn reel is on sale for $70, true enough.  The Extreme is also on sale for $65 if you have the Fall Angler catalog, but on the website it's still $80.

I was just looking at the Exceler and it looks like a good reel from what I saw about it but I didn't read anywhere that it has a metal sideplate.  Just an aluminum frame.  Of course I'm assuming we're talking about baitcast reels, not the spinning.

rooster, i've never read anywhere where the exceler baitcaster has an aluminum sideplate either...i just know because, when i remove mine, it's easy to tell. the negative to that would be that the walls are paper thin and prone to denting, i suppose.

but really, plastic sideplates are not bad...every other reel i have (curado Es, curado Ds, revo S and SX, pflueger summit) ALL have plastic sideplates as far as i can tell.

For a intro baitcaster i love mine. Only dislike i have is the drag system. Gotta get it juuuuuuuust right.
